As part of the Town’s Climate Action Plan, the Town of Telluride and the Town’s resource recovery partner, Bruin Waste Management, are working together to bring curbside compost to the town.
Bruin Waste’s curbside compost program will offer participating HOAs, businesses, and schools access to convenient organic waste collection services. Accepted materials will include food scraps, including fruit, vegetables, meat scraps, dairy, coffee grounds, and other biodegradable materials. Bruin Waste Management will process these collected items and turn them into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to enrich soils.
The Town of Telluride received a $10,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture as a subawardee under San Miguel County. The Town will utilize the grant funds to offer a rebate to local businesses and HOAs that sign up for a 12-month contract for curbside compost.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Bruin Waste to launch curbside compost in the Town,” said Sustainability and Grant Administrator Darin Graber. “This initiative allows us to give back to our community members interested in advancing the goals of the Town’s Climate Action Plan. Through composting, we can reduce landfill use, which cuts greenhouse gas emissions, conserves water, and fosters a sustainable, eco-conscious future.”
Bruin began a compost pilot program in September of 2023 with a targeted group of local businesses and HOAs to determine interest, analyze costs, and develop a service plan. The Bruin Waste Curbside Compost Program will feature weekly curbside pickup of organic waste for Telluride residents. Participants will lease a compost bin to collect food scraps, yard waste, and other compostable materials, which will be collected and processed into nutrient-rich compost at Bruin’s partner facility for the program, Delta Compost.
Composting offers numerous benefits, including reducing landfill waste and methane emissions, enriching soil with nutrients, conserving water by improving soil moisture retention, and minimizing the need for chemical fertilizers. It also supports local ecosystems, helps reduce carbon footprints, and can lead to cost savings for households and businesses by cutting down on waste disposal and fertilizer costs. Additionally, composting reduces pollution and prevents nutrient runoff, contributing to a healthier environment and more sustainable communities.
Town of Telluride, more:
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride’s captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley’s original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land “The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls.”
In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880.
Telluride’s allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames.
Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
