The Rocky Horror Picture Show originally opened Sept. 26, 1975, and was considered a total flop… but soon became the cult hit it is today.
Screened around the world with audiences wearing costumes, bringing their own props and yelling out their favorite lines or comebacks during the show, it has become more than just a movie. Going to a Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast is an experience. From cult happening to cultural icon, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is still going strong almost 50 years later. Telluride Theatre has been bringing the LIVE shadowcast to Telluride since 2014, every few years. Each shadowcast show has a whole new cast, outrageous fun & is a great way to celebrate spooky season! The cast & crew are all locals who are passionate about Rocky and all that is. A collaboration between Telluride Theatre & Palm Arts, funds go to support the two organizations.
“We are all so excited to bring ROCKY HORROR BACK! This has become a passion project for Telluride Theatre. I love it, the cast loves it. Rocky Horror is such an incredible, fun, weird event that celebrates our quirks, weird and wild. We were not planning it for 2024… but our Rocky cast, a few enthusiastic locals, and then finally Nicole Hattler from the Palm said “I really want to do Rocky this year.” So we just added it on to provide some great off-season community fun for everyone.” says Sasha Cucciniello, director of the event. “Rocky Horror is a wild night not to be missed. We have so much fun putting on this show, it’s a big party, where everyone (adults only) is invited.”
In the long tradition of this B-movie, Telluride Theatre creates a shadow-cast in front of the screen while the movie plays. With costumes, lights, dancing and much more. Sasha continues, “We really try to come at this with our theatrical know-how and make it interactive, immersive and raucous for the audience. The Palm Theatre is the perfect venue because while the movie plays on their huge screen we have a ton of extra space to do the shadowcast.”
Nicole Hattler, Managing Director of the Palm theatre approached Sasha this summer, “This is a fun way to use our space and bring our community together. I really wanted to do ROCKY HORROR and bring people into the Palm to experience it like they have not before.”
Audiences are encouraged to fully participate – saying lines, yelling at the screen, dancing in the aisles, throwing props from the goodie bags. During the film there are times when the audience sprays water, throws playing cards, throws rice… it is part of the interactive nature of the shadow cast. If you are an experienced Rocky viewer come prepared! (NO hot dogs, jello, confetti – they are prohibited!) If you have never been to a Rocky Horror Picture Show Movie with LIVE cast you are in for a treat and are totally covered.
PRE-SHOW party! The bar and concessions open at 7pm. GOODY BAGS with everything you need, plus easy to follow instructions, are available to purchase. It’s better with props & costumes! A photo booth to capture the fun. AND the event is partnering with TelluPride, a regional committee that has been organizing local events in celebration of, and promoting the safety of, the LGBTQ+ community since 2015, to have a Glitter Bar so everyone can be their most fabulous for the night.
“Don’t dream it, be it.” “Let’s do the Timewarp again!”
THE MOVIE – Cast – Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Meatloaf & many more Directed & Written by Jim Sharman 1975 (R) –
“Probably the oddest, most off-the-wall cult film ever made, this kinky rock’n’roll science fiction horror satire is everybody’s favourite midnight show. A young couple stumbles into a castle inhabited by weirdos from the planet Transylvania including Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry) a transvestite Frankenstein in rhinestone heels. A marvelous musical spoof which urges, “Give yourself over to absolute pleasure.”‘
