1920s Elementary School Halloween Celebration

“Here rests the body of a dear husband who lost his life
in the Smuggler-Union Mine Nov. 20, 1901
in trying to save the lives of others. Missed by a loving wife.”

That heart-wrenching epitaph marks the burial spot of Thorvold Torkelson in Telluride’s Lone Tree Cemetery. A victim of the brutal realities of the mining industry during an especially volatile time in local history known as the “Labor Wars,” Thorvold’s story is unfortunately not unique.

The remains of young men like Thorvold are peppered throughout the cemetery. While these men often lived brief, difficult lives, their stories should not be forgotten. Preservation of the cemetery and research into the everyday people who lived, worked, and died in Telluride is essential to understanding our evolution as a community and guiding the direction of our future. Now is your chance to get in the fall spirit while learning special stories of our past like these with our Lone Tree Cemetery Lamplight tours! These tours will depart from the shed at the cemetery at 6:30pm on October 11th, 18th, 25th under the ambience of lantern light.

Limited tickets available for these tours and pre-registration is required by calling the museum at 970-728-3344.

Also, don’t forget, the final historical walking tours for the season will take place on October 8th and 10th at 1pm.

While we closed the book on our Haunted Hospital event last year, the museum will still be the place to be on Halloween!

If you have kiddos who are of trick-or-treating age, we hope we will see you for our Halloween on the Hill event on October 31st. The evening will feature trick-or-treating and traditional Halloween games from 5-7pm on North Fir Street.

These events are only possible with the help of volunteers and we need folks to help hand out candy as volunteers stationed at homes up and down Fir Street or to host kids games at the museum. Interested in joining in on the fun? Email Theresa at theresa@telluridemuseum.org to sign up.

Can’t join us in person? You can still help out by donating candy for our volunteers to hand out on Halloween night. Candy can be dropped off at the museum or Alpine Bank or, if you prefer, you can make a monetary donation to purchase candy at this link!

Finally, as winter approaches, be sure to take advantage of locals free day on Saturdays and visit us before we close for of-season at day’s end on October 19th.

Thanks for a wonderful summer season!

Sincerely,

Your Museum Family
