Last November, we received a call from someone overwhelmed by the dogs they had taken in and needed immediate help. Five mixed-breed dogs were in the backyard, and the owner could not adequately care for or train them. Instead of dumping the pups, euthanizing them, or letting the situation further deteriorate, they did the right thing by reaching out to Second Chance Humane Society. Being a small shelter with limited space, a rescue such as this is challenging in many ways.
Five young dogs quickly became 13 dogs when two of the females delivered puppies. We’ve since found loving homes for two of the adults and all of the puppies. That leaves us with George, Latte, and Susie who are still waiting at the shelter.
When they arrived, they were under-socialized and in need of training and patience. Our talented and committed staff and volunteers have made huge strides with these dogs. They have spent countless hours walking them, playing with them, throwing balls, and teaching them that people are fun and trustworthy.
From our volunteers:
“George is super sweet and loves to be loved on. Although he does like to play, he also enjoys chilling with his people. He’s a very good boy.”
“Latte is goof girl supreme! She loves to play with you and other dogs. Latte is very loving and thinks she’s a little lap dog. She is a sweetheart.”
“Susie is so endearing, gentle, and affectionate. She is almost always prepared to settle down for a chill session.”
Although they look like black lab mixes, we have yet to define their breed mix. We speculate that the group is all related.. One of the puppy adopters ordered a DNA test, which came back with a mix of husky, German Shepherd, border collie, and pit bull. We are confident in saying they are mixed breed dogs, with several smart, trainable, and loyal breeds in the mix.
All three are now loving, social, and smart. Even a small shelter with great people dedicated to working with project dogs can be a stressful environment. They will need continued training, hopefully by compassionate and experienced dog people. We truly believe they will be loving pets.
We need foster homes for George, Susie, and Latte. Ideally, a quiet place with patient, dog-savvy people who can give them time to understand what it means to live in home. Long-term foster or adoption is the best scenario, but even a few weeks to unwind and relax would help them so much.
