Summer is in full swing in our beautiful mountain town and there is so much museum fun to join in on!

We are excited to announce that our 2024-2025 annual exhibit “You Are Here: Opportunity, Exploration, and Endurance in the San Juan Mountains” is now open. This exhibit features fascinating and rare historical maps displaying the diverse heritage that shapes Colorado’s identity including our Spanish, Mexican, Indigenous, and U.S. pasts. See these simultaneously beautiful and utilitarian pieces of history while you can.

Besides visiting our indoor exhibits there are tons of other fun cultural events to enjoy.

Parents and kiddos alike will be thrilled to hear that our trusty sluicing experience is now officially open and ready for you to pan for fossils and gems. Hours for the sluice are generally 11am-4pm depending on capacity.

Plus, don’t forget that our historical walking tours are a perfect summer activity. They take place weekly,Tuesday and Thursdays, starting at 1pm.

Be sure to join us for our two remaining free, family-focused Heritage Nights, July 2nd and July 9th, 5:30pm. Those programs take place at the museum and will give attendees an opportunity to try their hands at traditional crafts and skills. We are grateful to the American Academy of Bookbinding (a flagship program of the Ah Haa School for the Arts) for leading our July 2nd program. Don’t miss out on a chance to learn the fascinating art of bookbinding!

While we’re on the subject of much-anticipated museum programs, the Hike into History series begins this month! If you’ve ever wanted to brush up on your wilderness response skills – never a bad idea in our remote box canyon – make sure to sign up for a spot on our first hike with Kevin Dunkak of CPRWorld on July 27th. (More hikes take place on August 8th and September 7th,)

And if all that weren’t enough, we’re also excitedly looking forward to our two biggest events of the year in August. Please be sure to purchase your tickets and invite your friends to our fantastic Telluride Dinner Party on August 22nd. This special evening benefits the museum and takes place in the newly renovated historic depot, now the Telluride Science and Innovation Center. This special combination of food, culture, and friends will be steeped in unique Telluride history and a night to remember.

Lastly, but certainly not least, we can’t wait to see you at our “An Evening with Ken Burn”s film screening on August 25th. The event features a screening of the acclaimed director’s “Huey Long” documentary, followed by a Q&A session and book-signing.

Let’s explore some amazing history inside and out of our building this summer!

Sincerely,

Your Museum Family
