A new venue and a new musical!
THE INVINCIBLE 3 AND THE GREAT TELLURIDE BANK ROBBERY OF 1889 is the debut show at Telluride’s newest performance venue: the outdoor live music stage at the Silver Bell Mine in Ophir. The venue is being unveiled as a high-end, multi-disciplinary indoor/outdoor performance stage carved out of one of the Telluride area’s most spectacular and intact historical settings.
When owner of Telluride Outfitters Mike Doherty bought the Silver Bell Mine property in 2019, it was in a state of utter disrepair after decades of neglect. The venue, located just 19 minutes south of Telluride, was an active gold mine that Doherty has painstakingly restored and converted into this unique event space for entertainment and culture in the region.
The Silver Bell Mine marks its official opening with a staged concert reading of THE INVINCIBLE 3, an original ‘Western Heist” musical written by local Sean Mahoney in the spirit of Garrison Keillor’s old-time radio shows.
Mahoney, a veteran rock musical writer who has spent years working and writing Off-Broadway and whose musical, “Factory Girls,” is touring through Japan next summer, received two grants from Telluride Arts to write this musical about Butch Cassidy robbing his first bank in Telluride.
The musical features a hybrid rock and hip hop score that brings together influences ranging from Willie Nelson to the Beastie Boys.
Mahoney states:
“We all know Telluride is a gem among mountain towns, partly because of the outlaw spirit that’s been here since the start. Telluride is hard to get to, it attracts lifelong adventurers, it has a lot of eclectic music history, and it is where Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank. I’m really trying to capture that outlaw spirit in this limited-seat concert run, and can’t wait to work with Sasha, Mike, our amazing band and cast.”
The concert reading features local musicians and performers, with visiting LA actor Zachary Kanner playing the role of Robert Leroy Parker (Butch Cassidy). Sasha Cucciniello, is at the helm as Director. This summer’s performance of THE INVINCIBLE 3 is a staged concert, acting as a proof of concept, with plans for a full production and a longer run next summer, 2023.
Transportation from the Village Market Gondola courtesy Telluride Express will be provided. Seating is limited. The show will go on rain or shine, as the audience will be covered by a tent. Please dress warm.
