Telluride Chamber Music: Musicians from New York Philharmonic in Town, July 29 & 30!

“It is with much regret that due to a Covid outbreak amongst the musicians, we have had to cancel the upcoming “Musicians of the New York Philharmonic’ events this weekend. We are hoping to reorganize all three events at a later date, but in the meantime the health of our patrons and musicians remains our top priority. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank everyone for their continued support of Telluride Chamber Music. Stay healthy out there!”

Five musicians from the world-renowned New York Philharmonic are coming to Telluride for a weekend of concerts July 29 – July 30. The event is presented by the remix of Telluride Chamber Music. This Telluride Chamber Music Association series mark the very first time musicians from the New York Philharmonic have come to play in Telluride. Mindy Kaufman, flute; Ryan Roberts, oboe; Pascual Martínez-Forteza, clarinet; Kim Laskowski, bassoon; and Leelanee Sterrett, french horn have performed together in the renowned orchestra for many years and will be showcasing a selection of music expressly written for wind quintet. The five are some of the most sough-after musicians in their field and are thrilled to be coming to Telluride as part of Telluride Chamber Music’s new, year ’round series.

The three events each have a different focus, but all feature beautiful music from the Quintet. The wide range in ticket prices across the weekend means that hearing these fantastic musicians should be accessible to everyone.

The Gala evening on Friday, July 29, will be the first annual fundraiser for Telluride Chamber Music. The evening will feature an exclusive concert for a small audience with champagne and appetizers and the auction of an original piece of art by Bruce Gomez, as well as a chance to meet and talk with the musicians of the New York Philharmonic. The event takes place amongst the exhibits at the Telluride Historical Museum. All proceeds will go towards programming Telluride Chamber Music’s new year ’round concert series. Tickets are limited and can be purchased at telluridechambermusic.org

For kids and adults of all ages the quintet will be performing a version of “Peter and the Wolf” at Wilkinson Public Library on July 30, 2pm. This beloved piece by Prokofiev is a family favorite in which each instrument represents a different character as the story gets told by a narrator. The event is free. Snacks are provided. All ages are welcome. Kids are encouraged to dress up as the animals or even bring their favorite soft toy!

Finally the Main Event is an evening concert at the Sheridan Opera House on Saturday July 30, 7:30pm. The program is a wonderful mix of music for wind quintet and features composers such as Ravel, Reicha, Neilson plus a really fun South American piece by Julio Medaglia. Tickets are $30 – 45 for adults and $20-$30 for students and can be purchased from the Sheridan Opera House website sheridanoperahouse.com
