How far would you go for love? How do we get home? “EPIC! An Odyssey” gives the famed ancient Greek story of love, loss, monsters, gods, goddesses and rowing – a whole lot of rowing – the Telluride Theatre twist. A journey through art, life and love.

The foundation of Telluride Theatre is built on creating and producing original work. “EPIC! An Odyssey,” is completely original… made from an idea. The show is a chance for the company to get back to its roots while planting a seed to extend its artistic range.

The show is based on the poet Homer’s “The Odyssey,” a thousands-year-old tale. Originally spoken by oral poets, Homer wrote the epic, preserving it as a basis for all western literature. The story revolves around Odysseus’ 10-year struggle
to return home after the Trojan War. Plagued by hardships, monsters, deceit, war and the wrath of the gods, Odysseus keeps going towards his love, his home and his goal.

“I love history and have a special affinity for the ancient Greeks. Ever since “Dinner with Dionysus” originated 10 years ago I have wanted to create something based on the Odyssey. With the return of inside, in-person shows I wanted to do something special – create a multi-media performance piece. I brought together an incredible group of local artists to create a really cool immersive experience. While it is based on the Odyssey – it truly is an odyssey for our artists and audience,”
said Sasha Cucciniello, the show’s writer and director.

The team of artists working to create “EPIC! An Odyssey” have collaborated over the past months to create a unique theatrical experience:

“We wanted to return to the theatre with a beautiful journey with music, dance, art and incredible design.” continued Sasha.

Cat Lee Covert, Telluride Theatre’s choreographer created a landscape of movement throughout the piece. Of her work within the show she said:

“The process of devising an original show is one of my favorite things about choreographing for Telluride Theatre. This process, being our first live original work since Covid began, has been a trek in and of itself. I’ve had more cast input in this work than have ever before. The movement and choreography are much more based on specific feelings and spaces along a journey.”
