Telluride Ski Resort: In Memory of Matt Huebner!

It is with great sadness the Telluride Ski Resort announces the loss of Matt Huebner, a long time beloved ski instructor and friend. Matt passed away on March 17, 2022, while doing what he loved – skiing and teaching. He had been a ski instructor with Telluride for 18 years.

Matt

Lindsey Welter, manager of Adult Programs for the Telluride Ski & Sports School, encapsulated Matt’s spirit by saying:

“Matt is to be remembered as the man ever smiling underneath a full, white beard. His love for the sport was ever apparent in his enthusiasm to work with all guests; both those returning to ski with him specifically and beginners here for their first ever day of skiing. No matter the conditions; sunny or snowing, Matt was known to always wear sunglasses and a baseball cap. We will keep Matt in our hearts and minds as we ski this mountain he was so dedicated to as a career ski instructor.”

According to Noah Sheedy, Telluride’s Director of Ski & Snowboard School:

“Matt had an unrelenting positive attitude and truly loved teaching. Let’s live every day forward the way Matt led his own life – with gratitude and happiness.”

Matt lived in Mancos, Colorado where he spent many summers working as a Park Ranger at Mesa Verde National Park.

He was a wonderful and upbeat person who always showed respect and care for his students and friends. I am so saddened by the news of his death. I knew him for 15 years. He taught a group of us women off and on for years. We loved him. When I first started skiing the Plunge he stuck with me the entire time. He knew that I was nervous and he made sure I knew that he was right there. At the end of the season, he gave us women the “I skied the Plunge” buttons. And one of us made wrist bands that said “Matt’s Girls”. May you Rest In Peace Matt.

Matt was a genuinely “good guy”. Over the years, I took many classes with him. Always fun and I learned so much. He was a wonderful, patient teacher and he always had a smile and a kind word. He will surly be missed. RIP Matt.
