12 Sep Original Thinkers: Program (In-person + virtual add-ons)!
Telluride-based Original Thinkers (OT) is a thoughtful ideas festival regularly scheduled for September 30 – October 3, 2021, in Telluride – and this year, virtually 10/1 – 10/31.
The weekend generally features 10 programs, each built around a particular idea explored through a compelling mix of speakers, films, performance, and art. The program typically delves into the human condition by focusing on the intersection of ideas and individual stories.

The following is a note from OT Founder/Ringleader David Holbrooke about program additions to the virtual event. (Link above to see in-person add-ons. Those presenters and their work should also be included in the virtual mix.)
Dear Original Thinkers –
It is such a pleasure to program. I love working with a smart, fun team to figure out what reflects the times we are living in, no easy task given this particularly fluid and unsettling period.
Our full program consists of 10 shows. and we have previously announced our lineup for the six shows that will take place in-person here in Telluride. Of course, what is particularly exciting is most everything that happens in town will also be available online.
Now we are thrilled to release the rest of our virtual lineup.
These additions include appearances by the artist JR; conflict correspondent Jane Ferguson; health care advocate Dr. Paul Farmer; journalist Gwen Thompkins; comedian and filmmaker CJ Hunt and others.
JR and CJ will share their new and important documentaries; Gwen will speak about silence in the context of music; Jane will offer insights about will happen now in Afghanistan; and Paul will sketch a vision of how to achieve global equity in healthcare.
Our festival provides a robust mix of guests and, as always, advances our belief that our own stories hold big ideas that can shape our world in positive ways. These complex narratives reflect an ever more complicated society but, at the same time, supply us with some context and clarity for the here and now.
Check out what we are offering and, if it inspires you, purchase a Big Idea Virtual Pass, which lasts the month of October. The in-person festival in Telluride is almost at capacity with all Big Idea Passes sold out and a few Eureka Passes still available.
We are trying to build a community of Original Thinkers and you are certainly part of that, so we hope you will share what we are doing with your network. I know I am certainly grateful to be able to build out this stellar program with my wonderful OT programming colleagues Meredith Lavitt, Laura Shaunette and Skylar Schoemig.
I am also really grateful to you all for engaging with Original Thinkers. Please let us know if you have any questions…
OT & Covid-19:
We are in regular contact with our local County Health officials and other event producers about their own protocols and what we can learn from them. As of now, the consistent counsel has been to move forward smartly with all the appropriate precautions in place.
At our festival in Telluride this fall, we will require proof of vaccination and a negative test for everyone involved in the festival including all staff, guests and audience members. We may also require our audience to be masked during indoor shows.
The majority of our programs will be held at the historic Sheridan Opera House, which has a new ventilation system. We have also reserved the Transfer Warehouse, a terrific outdoor venue with four walls and no roof, making it an ideal open-air space to gather if the Opera House is problematic come festival time.
We have already cut back on the number of in-person passes available to the pulic in case we need to reduce numbers in the Opera House. While that tactic presents some challenges for OT’s business, health and safety comes first.
Please let us know if you have any concerns about our plans and we look forward to seeing you all in Telluride before too long.
