04 Oct One Book, One Canyon: Author-Scientist Robin Wall Kimmerer, 10/14
Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of the book “Braiding Sweetgrass,” is the Wilkinson Public Library’s One Book, One Canyon (OBOC) author for 2019.
Telluride’s third annual OBOC culminates with a visit from Professor Kimmerer on Indigenous Peoples Day, Monday, October 14. She is leading a writing workshop, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Her book talk and signing is scheduled for 6 p.m.
As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions about nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In “Braiding Sweetgrass,” Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise,” (author Elizabeth Gilbert).
Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is the author of “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge” and the “Teaching of Plants and Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses.” She lives in Syracuse, New York, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.
Telluride’s Wilkinson Public Library launched the region’s first community read program – One Book, One Canyon – in 2017 to encourage reading for pleasure and to foster a book-based community conversation.
Promotional copies of “Braiding Sweetgrass” are available at the library while supplies last.
One Book, One Canyon is made possible by the financial support of Friends of the Library and new partner this year, the Telluride Institute, which hosts Indigenous Peoples weekend.
