The 10th annual Top Chef Competition & Taste of Telluride is a benefit for Telluride’s One to One Mentoring Program. The fundraiser takes place Thursday, August 8, 5:30 – 9 p.m., at The Peaks Resort in Mountain Village. Tickets are $75  for general admission; $85 at the door. Click here or call 970-728-0885. New  this year. One to One has teamed up with the Telluride Jazz Festival so the event is bigger than ever, featuring a Jazz Fest patron tent, tasting menu, and a performance by one of the weekend’s top bands.

Also new: Twenty(by)Telluride, the One to One Mentoring Edition. That warmup event takes place Monday, August 5, in the bar at the New Sheridan. The collaboration with Telluride Arts follows the format that has made it a popular, creative addition to gatherings like the Telluride AIDS Benefit and Mountainfilm: fun, lively, fast-paced slide presentations that showcase the workings of creative mind. Presenters are allotted exactly 20 slides, shown for exactly 20 seconds each. Each presentation is about six-and-a-half minutes long and there are generally five presenters. At this special edition of Twenty(by)Telluride, mentors will talk about their mentees, how and why they chose this form of community outreach and engagement, what excites them about mentoring, what challenges them.

But what could possibly be the nexus of those luxury outings and a young person in need?

Connecting the dots, those are some of the extraordinary auction items featured at the One to One San Miguel Mentoring Program’s Top Chef Competition & Taste of Telluride event. Funds raised through the auction and the food, wine and spirits happening in general go to support at-risk youth in in Telluride, Mountain Village, Norwood, Naturita, and Nucla.

Research has shown that the single most important factor in a child’s success is his or her connection to a caring adult. One to One pairs young people with mentors who are charged with guiding their social, emotional, and academic development. Drilling down to the mission of the nonprofit: empower youth in San Miguel County to achieve their social, emotional and academic potential through professionally supported mentor relationships.

One to One was formed in 1993 by Telluride locals: John Mansfield and Allen Gerstle.

Mansfield was the Juvenile Diversion Officer and Gerstle was Director of Social Services. In dealing with children and families in crisis, the two saw the need for a mentoring organization in the greater Telluride community. One to One began as a branch of Delta-Montrose Partners and later worked under the umbrella of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of La Plata County. In 1999, the Board of Directors created an independent organization.

Starting with only 35 children, One to One has since served hundreds of youth in San Miguel County through a variety of enrichment programs tailored to address a diverse set of needs, plus offered scholarships.

Telluride’s One to One San Miguel Mentoring Program announces its 10th annual fundraiser, Top Chef & Taste of Telluride. The event takes place Thursday, August 8, 5:30 – 9 p.m. at the Peaks Resort & Spa, Mountain Village.  

Telluride “Top Chef” draws an audience of foodies, wine lovers, locals, second-homeowners, and visitors, who all show up in support of the cause. The evening takes attendees on a culinary tour of the area, focusing on regional wineries, breweries, distilleries, and restaurants, all of whom bring their best game and take pride in presenting their finest selections.

Top Chef/Taste includes live music and an array of bites and specialty drinks from local restaurants, wineries, and breweries. Watch local chefs in the Top Chef Competition go toe to toe –or toque to toque– in a heated culinary showdown. Watch bartenders make their specialty cocktail creation from a secret basket of ingredients.

All proceeds from the evening benefit One to One San Miguel Mentoring, again, the only nonprofit addressing the needs of at-risk young people in San Miguel County. The goal is to empower, in all good ways, the youth the nonprofit serves.
