“The Little Mermaid” is directed by YPT Artistic Director Leah Nikula and stars 23 actors in grades 6-8.
“The Little Mermaid is such an incredible show. It’s a story beloved by everyone, with some of the most iconic music of the century, and all of the characters are colorful and an absolute dream to get to play,” Nikula said.
Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glen Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” and “Part of Your World.”
The story unfolds with Ariel (played by Olivia Hatcher), daughter of King Triton (played by Gabe Waldor), who wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric (played by Holden Coppage) in the world above. She bargains with the evil sea witch, Ursula (Juliet Denman), to trade her tail for legs.
But the bargain turned out differently from what Ariel had hoped for and so she needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the Fish (played by Rowan Stephens), Scuttle the Seagull (played by Kiara Warren) and Sebastian the Crab (played by Kassidy Atherton) to restore order under the sea.
“The Little Mermaid” also stars Jack Spencer as the lovable and clever Grimsby; TJ Newman and Vanessa Ramirez as the slippery and sly sea spies Flotsam and Jetsam; Jerzy Tokarz, Eliza Jane Brown, Pippa Gorraiz, Ryann Singer, Ava Moorman and Charlotte Guest as the powerhouse singing mer-sisters; Griffin Craige as the hilarious Chef Louis; Savannah Baize as the sweet and endearing Carlotta. The cast is rounded out by Anna Ward, Lilly Jones, Devon Haynes, Gia Neyens, and Fianna Ahern who will portray seagulls, swamp creatures, sailors, palace staff, sea creatures and more.
“This is one of the most talented casts I have ever had the honor to work with. I cannot wait for the community to see the culmination of all of their hard work,” Nikula said.
