19 Jun TMVOA Announces 2017 Sunset Concert Series, 6/21-8/16
The Mountain Village comes alive this summer with the Sunset Concert Series every Wednesday night through mid-August as the Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association presents live music for its 18th annual Sunset Concert Series, June 21 – August 16. Attendance is free to all. Scroll down to listen to some of the performers in action.
The Sunset Concert Series consists of nine shows that take place on the lawn near Lift 1 in the Sunset Plaza in Mountain Village. The concerts start at 6 p.m. just as the sunset lights up the Wilson range in one of the most spectacular music settings in the country.
“TMVOA is proud to bring another summer season of music to Mountain Village,” said Anton Benitez, TMVOA Executive Director. “We look forward to having our members, guests and visitors come together for this weekly community event that has become one of the great summer traditions in the region.”
Mountain Village bursts with energy on show nights: several restaurants provide dine-in and to-go meals, while other attendees bring their own picnic dinners.
“A returning feature of this year’s event will be the Town of Mountain Village’s Entertainment District,” Benitez said. “This allows for a fluid social atmosphere in which alcoholic beverages purchased from attached restaurants can be taken into the Common Consumption Area and enjoyed during the concerts.”
The line up for 2017 includes the following: June 21: The Kitchen Dwellers; June 28: R.LUM.R; July 3 (Monday): Red, White & Blues with Lizz Wright; July 12: The Main Squeeze; July 19: New Orleans Suspects; July 26: Katy Guillen and the Girls; August 2: Diego Figueiredo; August 9: Sam Outlaw; August 16: Rualle Bualle.
“This is one of most diverse and high-profile lineups in the history of the series,” said Teddy Errico, Producer. “Together these bands have garnered millions of You Tube views. Personally, there is no one artist I am really looking forward to more than the other. What I am excited about is something truly different week in and week out. Whatever kind of music you like, you’ll find it this summer in the Mountain Village.”
Yes, diversity is the hallmark of this summer’s line-up. bluegrass, R&B, jazz, gospel, funk, rock n’ roll, Brazilian flamenco guitar, country and Irish Celtic Rock will be on display over the course of the concerts.
On June 21, the Montana-based bluegrass band The Kitchen Dwellers kick off the series.
The show is a homecoming of sorts for mandolin player Shawn Swain, who grew up in Telluride. Swain is the son of The Town Of Mountain Village’s Finance Director Kevin Swain and his wife Barb.
“The band’s first record just came out and debuted at #17 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart,” Swain said. “The Dwellers have been grinding on the road for the last several years and their hard work is paying off. Shawn is thrilled to be playing in his hometown.”
Next up is R&B singer R.L.UM.R, whose career has skyrocketed in the last year when his single “Frustrated” was featured on Sirius Radio’s channel “The Hear.” His soulful music includes a heavy dose of R&B with elements of Electronic Dance Music.
The fireworks of the July 4th weekend will be accentuated by Lizz Wright’s world-class jazz and gospel sounds. Her musical compositions and vocal style led to Wright to be compared to Norah Jones. Her first album, Salt, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Chart. Her next release, Dreaming Wide Awake, reached No. 1 on the same chart.
The next two bands on the line-up will bring the funk when The Main Squeeze and New Orleans Suspects hit the stage on July 12 and 19 respectively. The all women trio Katy Guillen and the Girls will blow minds with their hard driving rock n’ roll on July 26th.
Brazilian Flamenco guitarist Diego Figueiredo will bring an international flair to the series on August 2, as will series closer Ruaille Buaille from Ireland on August 16. These two bands sandwich country singer Sam Outlaw on August 9.
The Sunset Series is provided to the public free of charge by TMVOA and The Telluride Society for Music. Supporting sponsors include Alpine Bank, Madeline Hotel and Residences, Rodney Strong Vineyards, KOTO FM Radio, Telluride Resort Lodging, Telluride Ski & Golf, The Town of Mountain Village, The Peaks Resort & Spa, and The Market at Mountain Village.
