Earlier in the afternoon, Cousin Curtiss brings his signature high-energy performance, seen around Telluride all season long, to the Mountain Village Core to warm up the crowd and DJ Atomic spins. Then, after the Pond Skim Competition at the Gorrono Ranch, G. Love and Special Sauce will take the stage in the Core (around 3 p.m) to officially conclude the 2016-2017 ski season.
G. Love has come a long way in the last 23 years since the band was discovered in a Boston pub by drummer Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens. After playing together, they brought in upright bassist James “Jimi Jazz” Prescott: G. Love and Special Sauce was born.
The group’s self-titled debut featuring the hit “Cold Beverage” wound up going gold; the band became known for its live shows.
After playing with and without Special Sauce over the years, the trio is back together, creating its down and dirty “trashcan blues” sound with the latest album, Love Saves the Day, released last October.
Live shows featuring raw grooves and funky rock ‘n’ roll are still a rush for the group, with G. Love proudly describing himself as a road dog who “will be touring until I fall off the stage.”
Entry to Telluride’s closing day party is free, but limited to the first 100 participants. Costumes are encouraged and, thanks to Telluride Ski Resort sponsors, including Smith Optics, Osprey, and Helly Hansen, prizes will be awarded for the best skim, best costume, and best wipeout.
Postscript:
As the season starts winding down, the Resort is already looking towards next year and has set its operating dates for the 2017 – 2018 season.
Opening Day for the 2017/18 is scheduled for Thursday, November 23, 2017. Closing Day has been extended one week to Sunday, April 8, 2018.
“With the Easter holiday falling on Sunday, April 1 next year, we anticipate it would be beneficial to extend next season by one week,” said Bill Jensen, CEO of the Telluride Ski Resort. “Spring typically offers some of our best conditions, and this will allow visitors to extend their Easter holiday a bit longer and enjoy Telluride during one of the warmest and sunniest parts of our season.”
