22 Aug Nugget Theater: New Avalanche Awareness PSA
A new public service announcement (PSA) screening at Telluride’s Nugget Theater is meant to get locals and visitors to enroll in avalanche awareness classes. With the increase in back-country and side-country users, skiers and boarders need to educate themselves about backcountry protocol, equipment, and conditions.
The San Juan’s are historically one of the most avalanche-prone mountain ranges in the western United States, where natural- and human-caused avalanches can occur anytime during the winter. Filmmaker Ken Bailey helped create the campaign in collaboration with the American Avalanche Association and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center to screen in mountain town digital movie theaters. The PSA is dedicated to ski patrolman and mountain guide Peter Inglis, Bailey’s avalanche school instructor in the 1990s.
The PSA could not have been made without the help of local sponsor Jagged Edge Mountain Gear and grants from The Raynier Institute and Foundation and Just For Kids Foundation. The project was created locally with the help of Michael Friedman and Brett Schreckengost.
Avalanche awareness classes are offered throughout the winter through the non-profit San Juan Field School and The Telluride Avalanche School. More information can be found here.
The PSA project at the Nugget Theater is sponsored by US Bank and Telluride Properties.
