Telluride’s Ah Haa School announces it Annual Spring Youth Art Awards. Reception is Thursday, April 28. Jury selections at 6 p.m.

April is traditionally Youth Art Month in Telluride, a time to acknowledge and appreciate the great work being produced by young artists in the Telluride region.
This Thursday, April 28, Telluride’s Ah Haa School presents its annual Youth Art Awards. The event takes place in the Daniel Tucker Gallery and showcases a large variety of artwork created by 7,-12 grade students in Telluride and Norwood. This year also features a selection of work created by 5th and 6th graders from Naturita.
With participation from public schools as well as the Telluride Mountain School, Youth Art Award entries are divided into three age categories: grades 7-8; 9-10; and 11-12. This year’s work ranges from drawing and painting to printmaking, photography, and ceramics. A small jury will review the submissions and select the best work based on originality and strength, awarding cash prizes to “Best in Show” as well as individual cash prizes for each age group and honorable mentions. The public is encouraged to view the artwork during a reception this Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Awards will be announced at approximately 6 p.m.
This Youth Art Awards exhibition also features a series of manipulated digital photographs created by Naturita Middle School students.
“Naturita’s Middle School is made up of 5th through 7th graders, but their entries came from just the 5th and 6th graders, who are technically too young for this show,” explained Ah Haa Curriculum Director Jessica Newens. “Given that we had no submissions from Paradox School or Nucla High School, we wanted to include Naturita to make sure there was some West End representation,” adding “Besides, the project the kids did is fantastic and is well worth exhibiting.”

A special honorable mention certificate will be given to one Naturita Middle School student during Thursday’s reception.
“We love giving regional youth an opportunity to see their creativity exhibited in a real gallery setting,” said Newens. “The Youth Art Awards represent a great chance for students to showcase their best work and take inspiration from seeing the work of their peers.”
The show comes down Monday, May 2, so those who cannot make Thursday’s 5-7 p.m. reception are encouraged to see the show now through Friday, April 29.
Award winners will be posted to Ah Haa’s website after the award reception.
