The Telluride Mountain Club (TMC)  promotes personal responsibility, safety, and self-sufficiency while enjoying the backcountry and creating/preserving new and existing access for backcountry recreation in the Telluride region. The Club was founded in 1986 with the idea of focusing on local avalanche education classes. Since then, however, the nonprofit has grown by leaps and bounds.

Over the past 29 years, the TMC has evolved towards an access advocacy group with the goal of preserving and enhancing public assess to human-powered, non-mechanized activities including hiking, backcountry skiing and boarding, mountaineering, climbing, and other mountain-related recreation.

Since inception, the TMC has assisted with many different issues. Among our past accomplishments are:

  • Started Telluride’s first formalized local avalanche education classes
  • Insured Backcountry Access Points were included in the Telluride Ski Resort’s Prospect Basin expansion
  • Re-established public access to Silverpick Basin and Wilson Peak
  • Created successful ice-climbing management plan for Bridal Veil Falls
  • Became the land steward for the Society Turn Climbing Area
  • Preserve the Bilk Creek Climbing Area and planned the addition of parking, trails and safe anchors
  • Re-opened and now manage the Telluride Indoor Climbing Gym
  • Successfully re-opened access to the Gold Hill Backcountry Access Gates off the Telluride Ski Resort

Now the Telluride Mountain Club is offering an opportunity to join in our efforts at the first annual Telluride Mountain Club Pig Roast. The event takes place in Telluride Town Park and is a larger membership drive for local non-profits which advocate for education, appreciation, enjoyment, and protection of human-powdered, mountain-related activities in the Telluride region. Our menu includes: Cuban mojo roasted pig with flour and corn tortillas, pineapple salsa, black bean and corn salad, loaded baked potato salad and sweet and sour cole slaw.

Enjoy pork sandwiches, Telluride Brewing Company beer, live music, and good times, all for the price of a $10 membership to the club.

“We are excited to get together with our members and celebrate our ‘Freedom of the Hills.’ The Telluride Mountain Club works hard to preserve access to Telluride’s local climbing, hiking, backcountry skiing/boarding, mountaineering and all other non-mechanized activities. But we couldn’t do what we do without the support of our members,” said Josh Borof, vice-president, Telluride Mountain Club. “We look forward to getting together with our passionate community at the Pig Roast.”

Telluride Mountain Club would like to extend a huge thank you to our sponsors: The View at Mountain Lodge and Chef Bud, Telluride Brewing Company, the Dolores Food Market and Jagged Edge Mountain Gear
