The Telluride Foundation and Telluride Venture Accelerator to host workshop on hiring & managing employees & contractors. FREE legal workshop open to nonprofits, businesses, and the general public.
Having good employees and contractors is a critical if nonprofit and business organizations are to accomplish their missions. However, the rules and regulations associated with hiring and managing these workers can be confusing and complex. In order to help members of our business and nonprofit community become better employers of needed services, the Telluride Foundation and Telluride Venture Accelerator (TVA) are hosting attorney Michael Santo to explain the legal issues one should understand when hiring and managing employees and contractors. This workshop, “Hiring & Managing Employees & Contractors” will be held on June 17 from 9:00am to noon at the Telluride Library Program Room in Telluride, CO. The workshop is free and open to the public.
“Employment lawsuits are on the rise, particularly against small employers,” states Santo. “This talk will endeavor to provide employers the critical information necessary to avoid such lawsuits and substantially reduce their potential liability.”
During the workshop, Santo will discuss a variety of employment topics including: 1) the independent contractor dilemma –how organizations correctly classify independent contractors vs. employees and what steps organizations can take to limit their liability and reduce the likelihood of being subjected to an adverse audit by the State of Colorado; 2) employment discrimination issues, including hiring and firing — with a recent change to Colorado law, small employers are now more likely than ever to be sued by a former employee; and 3) wage and hour issues, including understanding the nuances of federal and state laws regarding minimum wage and overtime pay as well as topics such as rest and lunch breaks, paid-leave policies, telecommuting policies, “on-call” time, training, and travel time.
Michael Santo began practicing law in his home state of Michigan in 1992 after receiving his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and his law degree from the University of Detroit. Within a couple of years after graduation from law school, he fulfilled a life-long dream of moving to Colorado. Then, in 2005, he and his now-retired partner, Betty Bechtel, formed a firm that focused solely on providing employment advice to employers. Michael focuses his practice on defending companies in employment litigation, including race, sex, age, national origin, religious and disability discrimination lawsuits; wrongful discharge; and wage and hour matters. In addition, he regularly represents employers in prosecuting and defending claims of trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, and employee raiding. Additionally, counseling companies on day-to-day employment issues is also an important part of Santo’s practice. The service includes counseling employers on hiring, discipline, and termination decisions; on leave and disability issues; and on preparing and revising employee handbooks. Santo is also a frequent lecturer on employment law issues, and contributing author to “The Practitioner’s Guide to Colorado Employment Law, Continuing Legal Education (CLE) in Colorado, Inc.” (1999 and supplements); “The Practitioner’s Guide to Colorado Business Organizations, CLE in Colorado, Inc.,” (2004); and “The Employer’s Advisory,” a Bechtel & Santo quarterly newsletter, published since 1994.
