18 Nov TSRC: Two Scientists Win 2014 Nobel Prize
Two Telluride Science Research Center scientists win 2014 Nobel Prize in chemistry
TSRC scientists Eric Betzig, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and William E. Moerner, Stanford University, were awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work developing super-resolved fluorescence in microscopy, along with Stefan W. Hell, Max Planck Institute. This marks the second year in a row that two TSRC scientists won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Last year, TSRC scientists Arieh Warshel, University of Southern California, and Michael Levitt, Stanford University, won the Prize along with Martin Karplus, Harvard University. Congratulations to them all for their crowning achievement.
THREE TSRC SCIENTISTS ELECTED TO THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
In April of 2014, the National Academy of Sciences announced the election of new members, including three TSRC scientists: Cynthia Burrows, University of Utah; Mark Johnson, Yale University; and Fraser Stoddart, Northwestern University.
FIVE TSRC SCIENTISTS ELECTED TO THE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF QUANTUM MOLECULAR SCIENCE
In July 2014, eight scientists were elected new members of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science, five of whom were TSRC scientists: Millard Alexander, University of Maryland; Garnet Kin-Lic Chan, Princeton University; Sharon Hammes-Schiffer, University of Illinois; So Hirata, University of Illinois; Wenjian Lu, Peking University. Additionally, the 2014 “Medal of the IAQMS” was awarded to TSRC scientist Edward F. Valeev, Virginia Tech Professor.
THREE TSRC SCIENTISTS WIN NATIONAL AWARDS FROM THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
The Physical Chemistry Division of the ACS annually sponsors senior and early-career awards in theoretical and experimental physical chemistry to recognize the most outstanding scientific achievements of members of the division. This year, TSRC scientists won three of the four awards. Douglas J. Tobias, University of California, Irvine, won the 2014 Award in Theoretical Chemistry. Vartkess A. Apkarian, the 2014 Award in Experimental Physical Chemistry. Filipp U. Furche, University of California, Irvine, the 2014 Early-Career Award in Theoretical Chemistry. Read more.
TSRC SCIENTISTS APPOINTED TO LEADERSHIP POSITIONS
Peter Littlewood was appointed Director of Argonne National Laboratories in April 2014. Peter Rossky was named Dean of Rice University’s Wiess School of Natural Sciences in August 2014. Paul Shepson joined the National Science Foundation as Director of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences in September 2014.
