Second Chance: Meet Steele & Star

Second Chance: Meet Steele & Star

Hello, my name is Steele. I am a darn good lookin’ Australian Cattle Dog. I am currently hanging out with my friends at Second Chance Humane Society, playing with (and herding of course) my dog buddies in our big play yards. As an Australian Cattle Dog, you may know that I am looking for a new friend who will be my best friend and I mean really be my best friend.

Us ACDs are loyal and don’t mess around when it comes to bonding with our persons. I’d like to own an active sort of person, but I do not require the type of exercise the young border collies around here need. Just a nice walk a few times a day and I would love a few good hikes now and then….it’s always good to get out into nature.

They tell me I am a little over a year old, whatever that means, I just know I have a lot of life to live and love to give. We share the ranch out here with the feline species – although I am not allowed to herd them. I did hear that there is a girl named Star who, if you really favor that sort, you might like to meet.

Hi, this is Star. I am what they call a “Torbie” or Tortoiseshell tabby mix. I do agree my coloring is rather stunning and of course, I keep my coat shiny and soft. However, I can tell you that I am not slow and I am not much of sea creature so the Tortoiseshell remark always has me confused.

My friends here say I am a laid back kind of gal. I love to sit in the window, sunning myself and watch the world and birds go by. I love to cuddle and get my petting on demand, but I am also an independent girl.

I would be happy with many different types of families big or small. I like kids and big people, young and old. I love the sun and to watch the yard but prefer to live safe and secure inside the house or apartment or even on a nice screened in patio like the one I have here at the shelter.

I don’t mind if my family wants another dog or cat or two, I can share. I have to admit that there are a lot of other great cats here with me at the Shelter and wow, kittens coming out of the wood work, so come over, meet me, say hi to my friends and I suppose you could head down and throw a ball for Steele if you are of the canine persuasion.

Editor’s note: It’s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Well, pet heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue. Second Chance is the region’s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals’ lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. In her weekly blog, executive director Kelly Goodin profiles at least one, generally two of the many animals now living at the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving permanent homes. The column is sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer, partnering with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.

By the by, there is no better place to park your pup than Cottonwood whenever you head out of town (for locals) or are heading to town and staying somewhere that does not allow pets. Consider joining Ted’s Very Important Dog (VID) Club for added benies. (Details on Ted’s website.)

Second Chance Humane Society Animal Resource Center and Thrift Shop are both located in Ridgway, but service San Miguel, Ouray & Montrose Counties. Call the SCHS Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet, learn about adopting a homeless pet, or about the SCHS Spay/Neuter, Volunteer, Feral Cat, or other Programs.
