Sleek and sultry, with a capacity of 450, a large performance stage, red ambient lighting throughout the room, and seating areas for a more private experience, Club Red is is reminiscent of speakeasies of the past with the feel of a 30’s era jazz club and expected to become a choice music venue in the Telluride region.

And Club Red twins with Denise Mongan. The place is the brainchild of the music producer (massage therapist and homeopathic healer).

Cash’d Out

The seeds of Club Red were planted in 1999, when Mongan really began to hone her ear with great success:

“The two bands I picked out as the sounds of 2013 were indeed #1 and #2 on the BBC sounds of 2013: Kodaline and Haim! I just seem to have an instinct for what new music will do well and am a passionate listener. I tune into European radio, which is always cutting edge. I have enjoyed scouting talent and producing shows for many years and now have my own production company, Beyond the Groove. Last year I produced three shows at the Moon saloon: Sea Wolf, the Cave singers and Toubab Krewe. I will produce many more.”

The music Mongan tends to listen and scout tend to be indie – and very very good.

The first show at Club Red (March 7) featured the alt country band Blitzen Trapper. On Sunday, July 6, 8:30 p.m., the band is Cash’d Out, an award-winning Johnny Cash tribute band, hailed by critics as  “next best thing to Johnny Cash.” The event is brought to you by Mongan’s Beyond the Groove Productions and supported by the Telluride Conference Center, Telluride Ski & Golf, and the Inn at Lost Creek.

The San Diego-based band Cash’d Out – Douglas Benson on vocals, Kevin Manuel on guitar, Ryan Thomas on bass and George Bernardo on drums – won four San Diego Music Awards for Best Tribute Band, but the real proof of their prowess lies in what members of Cash’s inner circle have said. Their comments place Cash’d Out on the inside of Cash’s “Ring of Fire.”

“Cindy Cash came to a show, we made her cry and she gave me a necklace with Johnny’s hair in a glass locket,” explains front man Douglas Benson.

Benson added that Cash producer Lou Robin has also been to several Cash’d Out shows, and claimed that if he closed it eyes it was like “going back in time.” 

W.S. Holland, Cash’s longtime drummer, even sat in with Cash’d Out at a birthday celebration for Johnny Cash hosted by Bill and Shannon Miller of JohnnyCash.com at the Fender Museum in Corona, California.

“And Bill let me play Johnny’s cherry sunburst Guild guitar,” added Benson.

Cash’d Out is also the only tribute band endorsed by the official Johnny Cash web page, JohnnyCash.com.

Cash’d Out has played to over 1.2 million fans since forming in 2005. And they continually tell the group how grateful they are that Cash’d Out continues to bring back memories of loved ones who once raised them on the music of The Man in Black.

The band’s live shows respectfully reference the late, great man’s Sun Records and early Columbia-era sound, combined with the energy of the classic multi-platinum live recordings from Folsom Prison and San Quentin.   Their extensive repertoire can deliver up to four hours of non-stop solid entertainment.

The group’s genuine love (and authentic recreation) of Johnny Cash’s music and its universal appeal fans of all ages and of virtually all musical genres makes each Cash’d Out show a must-see event.

Or as Miller says, “Some people are Impressionists. These guys leave an impression.” 

Doors open for Cash’d Out  Club RED at 8:00 p.m. Show time is at 8:30PM. Show is for all ages. Tickets $15 GA pre-sale.
