24 Jun The Peaks Eco-Spa: Health, Beauty & Wellness
“Our mission is to empower individuals by helping them make conscious, positive choices about their health, wellness, and beauty designed to enhance everyday living and quality of their lives overall,” Darla Loomis, spa director, Peaks Resort.
32 treatment rooms offering the latest in massage and aesthetics by nationally and state-licensed therapists?
Check.
Multiple dry saunas, Roman tubs, 3 jacuzzis, 2 natural mineral salt baths, and eucalyptus-infused steam rooms, both gender-specific and co-ed?
Full fitness center offering privates and group classes?
Yoga and Pilates studios?
Cycling studio?
Oxygen therapy?
Two pools including a lap pool and indoor/outdoor pool with a water slide?
Yes again.
Full-service salon offering hair and color services, manicures, pedicures, waxing, spray tanning, and lash extensions?
Wellness coaching?
Cybex circuit weight equipment, squash and tennis?
Bingo!
It’s all there and much more at the award-winning (and newly renamed) Eco-Spa and Wellness Center at The Peaks, the Telluride region’s only full-service hotel.
“As regionally relevant as possible.”
That’s the flag The Peaks Resort & Spa’s general manager, Dave Ciani, is waving these days.
Regionally relevant?
Pshaw..
In the U.S. alone, where there are more spas than Starbucks (a good guess based on Internet sources is 21,000 versus about 18,000 across the country), The Peak’s 42,000 square-foot facility, the largest in Colorado, was named by Conde Nast Traveler among “the top resort spas in the country.”
In the country!
What used to be a pastime of the rich and famous only is fast becoming as routine as texting.
But exactly why is there more action at hotel spas than in Vegas?
Because peace of mind has become as precious a commodity as a D-flawless diamond (conflict-free, natch).
And what better place to power down a busy mind, be pampered and also address life issues such as – listen up Boomers – aging, as well as diet and lifestyle in general than a spa like The Peaks? Holistic, healthy, and sustainable living through self-care and rejuvenating services are the watchwords of this oasis. And it all takes place in a setting world-renowned for unparalleled beauty, where you are surrounded by 14,000-foot Rocky Mountain peaks. (All the better to think lofty thoughts.)
So when you stop to smell the coffee (or decaf Chai latte) and realize that your work has deprived your inner child of tender love and care for so long that she (or he) is turning into Methusela, consider turning to the new and improved Peaks Eco-Spa.
In what ways new and improved?
It’s not just the additions to the products and services offered. Or the quality of the service providers, which is very high. (Full disclosure: I know from whence I speak because I am proud to say I am a member of the team, a yoga teacher with multiple certifications.) It is the underlying management philosophy, clearly penciled out and actualized every day in every way by a new managing director, an entrepreneur who walks her talk about the mind-body connection, health, wellness, and spirituality.
Darla Loomis grew up behind-the scenes in the beauty industry. Initially drawn to nursing, she later followed her instincts into the spa industry, where she developed award-winning spa across the country. She is also on the board of a national environmentally focused non-profit.
Plans for The Peak’s spa include artist retreats and author workshops. And more special, customized programs for members, guests, brides, mothers-to-be, men and teens.
Darla understands the devil is in the details, which is why she had the cover of the spa menu printed with soy ink on eco paper and why wellness coaching and personal training are complimentary for each and every member of her team.
“The practice of encouraging our team to experience our bounty comes from the philosophy we cannot give what we don’t have. By giving gifts to ourselves, we have more to give in return to our guests at The Spa at The Peaks.”
All the lotions and potions in the new wellness lifestyle store are eco-certified.
Loomis’ goal: “Create new ways of working and playing in the Telluride region.”

(And stay tuned to TIO for posts by our writers who will be testing the limits of spa’s claims. Is it really as good as all that?)
