To watch Gus qualify, be at Oak’s tonight around 11 p.m. or download the NBC Live Extra app and log in. (Note: you have to have an online account or create one in order to log in on NBC app.)

It’s not even the Telluride Film Fest, but our town has stars in its eyes – and eyes on the Sochi Olympics because homeboy, Gus Kenworthy, is free- skiing for the United States.

Here’s a profile of The Young Man of the Moment from usfreeskiing.com.

“Gus Kenworthy has emerged as a double threat, mastering both slopestyle and halfpipe disciplines while maintaining a rapid ascent through the freeskiing ranks. Both his recent success and his childhood spent skiing the legendary steeps and backcountry of Telluride have put Kenworthy on the path to becoming one of the top all-around skiers in the world.

Kenworthy first gained recognition for his park skiing with one of his ski movie edits he posted on the Internet. Shortly thereafter he began filming with well-known ski production companies and working his way into the freeskiing elite, a place he intends to stay.

Kenworthy then had a clean sweep of the Aspen/Snowmass Open slopestyle and halfpipe skiing events in both 2010 and 2012, which he followed up by winning the 2011 and 2012 AFP overall titles. In the 2012 season, he competed in more than 23 events and took dual wins in big air and slopestyle at the final event of the season, the AFP World Championships.

After putting his time in, 2013 proved to be a breakthrough season for Kenworthy. With over 20 competitions under his belt, he took second at the Olympic venue halfpipe World Cup in Sochi, Russia and won his first X Games medal in Tignes: a bronze in slopestyle. The momentum is pointing Kenworthy exactly where he would like it to…to Sochi, Russia.

GUS SAYS:
At the beginning of the season, my head was flooded with different goals I wanted to achieve and accolades I was hoping to garnish. Although it hasn’t been a perfect year, it has definitely had its peaks and I feel like I’m in a great position to be in heading into next year’s Olympic Games! Next season’s qualification process is going to be more grueling and competitive than any other nation, but through that I think the U.S. will have the strongest team in Sochi, Russia and I feel confident that I will be a part of it!

FIRST TRACKS
While growing up in a town like Telluride, CO, it isn’t uncommon to start skiing at an early age. Kenworthy’s parents got him out on the hill shortly after he was walking and he’s never looked back.”

And the following is how to watch him at the Olympics:

  • Opening Ceremony – He’s in it,  but whether he gets on camera or not is anyone’s guess. On NBC at 6:30 PM MT.

  • Slopestyle Qualifier – This takes place at 10 AM Thursday, Feb. 13 Sochi time, which is 11 PM in Telluride. You can stream the event live on NBC’s website (NBC.com that will take you to NBCOlympics.com) if you are a paying cable or satellite subscriber with NBC channels in your subscriber package. AND you need to know your user name and password. Alternatively, you can jimmy your computer to make it think you are actually in Canada or Great Britain where streaming is available to all. Here’s a link to a Forbes article that explains how to dupe the system.
  • Slopestyle Final – Takes place same day as qualifier, a few hours later. So, somewhere in the vicinity of 2:30 AM in Telluride on Thursday, 12-13. The only way to watch live will, again, be by streaming. Taped coverage of the final will be part of NBC’s prime time network broadcast on Thursday evening, February 13.  If Gus makes it to the final, you should be able to see him then. However, the show may only include top runs – not the whole competition – so it’s hard to predict whether you will or won’t see him.

  • NBC’s cable sports channel, NBCSN – Will have the majority of televised Olympics  coverage and may show the slopestyle events after the fact. And the qualifier and final runs may be posted on NBC’s website for general viewing post-events.

  • Telluride Community Event – If Gus gets to the final, and depending on his final results, we are hoping to have a community screening of the prime time NBC broadcast beginning at 7 PM MT at The Palm Theater. We will get the word out as soon as possible on Thursday morning via KOTO, the newspapers, and all local social media.
