Telluride Nordic Association: Ski Swap & Pot Luck Social

Telluride-Nordic-Association_NTb-Faraway-10The Telluride Nordic Association (TNA) is a 501©(3) non-profit dedicated to the education and enhancement of Nordic skiing for individuals of all ages and abilities in the Telluride region. TNA has an all-volunteer working board which spends countless hours making Nordic skiing a reality. Still, the organization needs the financial support of the many individuals in our community who enjoy the fruits of TNA’s labor. (Like us.)

On Sunday, December 8, TNA hosts a ski swap and Mexican potluck social, 4:30 – 7 p.m. at The Depot (now the site of the Ah Haa School). If you have gear to sell, please bring it to the Depot at 4 p.m. so it can be tagged and ready.

What TNA does:

TRAIL PLANNING, MAINTENANCE AND GROOMING: TNA professionally grooms and maintains trail systems for cross-country skiing at Priest Lake and Trout Lake. Each year, TNA prepares trails for grooming and rebuilds the river crossings for the loops at Priest Lake. Although we receive some assistance from the County, the Town of Telluride and the Telluride Foundation, we still have significant hard costs for these amenities.

Our biggest expenses are maintenance and fuel for the grooming equipment and grooming labor costs. Professional grooming is essential for the full enjoyment of Nordic skiing – and using a professional ultimately saves money and energy by virtue of efficiency and understanding how to care for the equipment.

TELLURIDE NORDIC CENTER: Run by our amazing long-time Nordic Director, Midnite Scholtes, the Nordic Center rents Nordic equipment and ice skates, waxes skis, sharpens skates, and offers lessons and clinics to suit all levels of Nordic skiers. For more information go to www.telluridetrails.org or call 728-1144.

RACE: TNA hosts the annual Butch Cassidy Chase, which takes place February 15, 2014. It’s a fun event for all ages and abilities with options of 5k, 15k and 30k. The event will wrap up with a BBQ and prizes.

2013-14 TRAIL PLAN:

This season marks the third year of a three-year transition for the Town to assume primary responsibility for grooming on the Valley Floor. Based on experience from the two previous seasons, TNA recognizes a need to stay involved in management of winter trail uses on the VF. TNA would like to formalize its continued role in an agreement with the Town of Telluride.

Last season, TNA formally requested approval from the USFS to expand trails groomed at Trout Lake. TNA board members recently met with USFS Norwood District representatives for an update on the approval process.

The FS has requested that TNA submit a 10-year master plan for Nordic trails at Priest and Trout Lake. If all goes well, expanded trails may be possible sometime during the 2014-15 season. (Stay tuned for opportunities to voice your support!)

TRAIL FEES: Most groomed cross-country systems charge a daily fee from $8-$18. TNA grooms on public lands. Due to the nature of our leases and permissions, TNA cannot mandate trail fees like similar entities. In essence, TNA relies on generous donations and membership fees to supplement the grants received from the Telluride Foundation, San Miguel County and CCAASE

HOW YOU CAN HELP: Become a member of TNA! Please encourage others to do so as well. Your donation to TNA will be used to directly fund the trails. Your contributions are needed today for trail grooming! Keep Town Council members and County Commissioners informed of your support for cross-country skiing in and around Telluride. Sign-in at trailheads, tracking skier days provides important data for TNA grant requests. Acknowledge our donors. Donate at the trailhead boxes.
