15 Dec Great Early Season Skiing in Telluride
Each winter season in Telluride there is the anticipation that this year will be the banner year, the one we remember long after the snow has melted. This year has the makings of being one of those.
This past week has been busy, busy enough that good intentions got buried by work and deadlines. But when I heard that Lift 12 was going to be opened on Saturday and that the liklihood of epic snow in the steep hike-to runs above the Prospect lift meant that some great runs were there for the taking, I knew I had to make time to get out on the mountain.
I wasn’t there for first tracks, and truth be told Genevieve had been tracked up pretty good by the time I got to the top, but it was good, real good. I ended up getting two runs, plus a bonus of a steep groomer on Stella. Even though a lot of skiers (by Telluride standards) had beat me to Genevieve, the snow was still deep and soft. My first run was a lot tentative, but by the second I was a bit looser, and the turns down that intense drop felt good. Responsibility called and I finished that run at the Gold Hill lift, had a fast cruise back to the Mountain Village core, dropped off my skis and boots at the yurt by the Gondola, then had a beautiful walk down Boomerang Road and home.
Walking back along the bike path I looked back up at the mountain. Yes this was one of those days I’ll remember long after the snow has melted.
