17 Oct SPARKy Productions & The Palm: NT Live, “Othello”
On Tuesday, October 22, SPARKy Productions and the Michael D. Palm Theatre co-host a screening of the National Theatre of Great Britain’s hugely popular production of William Shakespeare’s “Othello.”
Otherwise known as “The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice,” “Othello” was written in 1603 – but its themes of racism, love, jealousy, and betrayal resonate today. The play revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his new wife, Desdemona; his lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted ensign, Iago.
The London Observer had this to say about the latest production of “Othello” by the National Theatre of Great Britain:
“Terrifically exciting, exceptionally coherent. It drives forward with hyper-clarity, as if each line were being X-rayed.”
For naysayers who complain Shakespeare is hard to understand, the National Theatre’s production is guaranteed to be illuminating and exciting,
This adaptation is set with precision on a British army military base in Cyprus. Nicolas Hytner who directed the stage play of “War Horse” and Alan Bennett’s “The History Boys,” is perhaps one of the greatest theatrical directors alive today. Hytner went to enormous pains to update the play’s venue and make the re-imagining believable, even hiring an ex-Army man to recreate the barracks.
Current productions at the National Theatre on the South Bank in London are sold out. People come from all over the world to this great venue. NT LIVE brings these incredible productions to cities all over the world in simulcast performances, where again, venues are generally sold out. Here in Telluride we are lucky that for a fraction of the price of a London theatre ticket, we can re-create a world-class theatrical experience.
his summer, SPARKy Productions and the Palm brought the NT LIVE simulcast production of “Audience,” starring Helen Mirren, to Telluride. This winter, NT LIVE will be screening new productions for local audiences, not-to-be-missed classics and new plays.
