13 Oct Ah Haa Hosts 4th Annual BRA-vo
It’s not easy for a wolf to don sheep’s clothing. It’s much the same for a man trying to squeeze himself into a woman’s brassiere. But that’s exactly what a few fabulous men will be doing next Thursday, October 17th, for the 4th annual Ah Haa BRA-vo Invitational.
The event, which is a collaborative fundraiser for the San Miguel Resource Center and the Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Group of Southwestern Colorado, is two-fold. Artists and art-inclined members of the community can pick up a bra at Ah Haa to decorate this week. All bras must be returned by Monday, October 14th. Men will then showcase the bras at the Sheridan Bar during the fundraiser on Thursday, the 17th. Following the runway show, the bras will be available in a live auction.
BRA-vo, in many ways epitomizes true Telluride spirit, which is both compassionate and fun-loving. “This event has become an exciting event for our community to get involved in,” said Kathleen Cole, Special Events and Marketing at the Ah Haa School for the Arts. “Everyone from local artists, firemen, the Sheridan Bar, and our community have made this event grow and become a fun and unique way for our community to come together, express itself creatively and shine a light on serious and often very painful challenges.”
As October is both Breast Cancer Awareness month and Domestic Violence Prevention Month, it’s a perfect time to run this event, raising funds and awareness about both. “It is so important that we bring to light and support these huge issues facing so many women and men,” said Cole.
The spirited combination of decorated bras sported by Telluride’s men brings those issues to light in a memorable way. “We all know Telluride is a uniquely talented community. At no time is this more apparent than in the bras people submit for the BRAvo fundraiser each year: everything from bottle caps, paint, felt and even keys and electronics have adorned the undergarments-as-canvas Ah Haa provides each year. And the men who model the unmentionables are equally colorful and uninhibited. Why men? Because breast cancer effects men through their mothers, daughters, sisters and wives and having guys model the bras allows them to become an active part of the event, turning the tables in a fun and festive way,” said Kathleen Cole.
