On Tuesday, the Telluride Historical Museum celebrated its designation as an Affiliate Museum of the world-renowned Smithsonisan Institute. But none of us under the roof of the former-hospital-turned-celebrated repository of regional history is resting on our laurels. August is packed with great things to see and do, including walking tours, architecture tours, fireside, schedule below:

Historic Telluride Walking Tours, Thursdays through August, 1-2 p.m. Tickets at the Museum: Join longtime local Ashley Boling for this lively glimpse into Telluride’s past.

Historic Architecture Tours, Fridays in August starting Aug 9, 10am-12pm. Tickets at the Museum: Local architect George Greenbank takes you behind the scenes of Telluride’s historic structures.

Fireside Chats, Wednesdays at the Norwood Livery, Thursdays at the Peaks, 5:30.p.m., FREE. (No Chats on August 7 or 8): History comes to life as presenters explore colorful characters from Colorado’s past

10th Annual Feasting on History-a Dinner Theater Experience, Thursday, August 8, 6:30 p.m.: The Sheridan Opera House turns 100 years old this year, being the last major construction project of Telluride’s mining boom. In honor of this local landmark, the Telluride Historical Museum is proud to display a Sheridan Opera House exhibit through the summer of 2013. The exhibit features two original Opera House chairs, several original film posters, as well as theater film reels and lighting equipment. For the event, a fundraiser, the Museum invites everyone to step back in time to celebrate the opening of the Sheridan Opera house. Seating is limited. Tickets at telluridemuseum.org  

Alpine Tunnel Trip, Friday – Sunday, Aug 16-18, $65: Rudy Davison leads this weekend tour of the Alpine Tunnel and the surrounding areas of Gunnison and Crested Butte.

Hike into Geology, Saturday and Sunday, Aug 24-August 25,$30/ $25 Members / $15 age 8 and under: Bring the kids and join geological experts Rudy Davison, Todd Brown and geologist/gemologist Mark Krivanek for this two-day, family-friendly program. Gather your samples, have them identified and learn more about Telluride’s geological significance.

Pan for gold: The Museum’s mining sluice is open for the summer. Grab a bag of mining rough and stake your claim at our outdoor sluice to pan for hidden gems. You never know what kind of treasures you may find. The interactive display provides hands-on fun for all ages. Bags of mining rough are $6 each and can be purchased at the Museum.
