01 Aug Telluride Film Festival: Final Herzog on 8/5/2013
Telluride Film Festival Cinematheque at the Wilkinson Public Library Presents: Werner Herzog Summer Series
As we rapidly approach the 40th Anniversary of the Telluride Film Festival and the unveiling of the new Werner Herzog Theatre in Town Park, this will be the last opportunity pre-Festival to catch a TFF SHOW showcasing the work of the new theatre’s namesake. Two stunning documentaries by Herzog will be featured for free and served up with food and lively discussion, of course. The evening will be hosted by director, producer, film professor and local cinephile David Oyster.
Programmed by Telluride Film Festival co-artistic director Gary Meyer, the series wraps up on Monday, August 5th with “La Soufriere” (1977, 31 min), a documentary short about a volcano erupting on the island of Guadeloupe and the people who chose to stay behind. After Herzog hears that one man has refused to leave despite warnings and evacuation, he travels there with his crew to understand the man’s relationship with death.
Followed by “The White Diamond” (2004, 87min), Herzog’s documentary about the “Jungle Airship,” a daring and unique flying machine engineered by Dr. Graham Dorrington and designed to explore the rainforest canopy over the jungles of Guyana.
“I direct you — nay, order you — to do whatever you must to see Herzog’s latest exploration,” wrote Andrew O’Hehir of Salon.com, “It’s an indescribable, haunting human story of airships, disasters and the mysteries of the Guyanese jungle…The White Diamond is an inexpressibly beautiful and moving film.”
The screening takes place Monday, August 5, 5:30 p.m. at the Wilkinson Public Library (5 p.m. for pre-SHOW reception).
