Second Chance: Bella, Beautiful & Homeless

Bella

Bella

My name is Bella and I have the very dubious distinction of being the perfectly adoptable cat at the Second Chance Humane Society shelter waiting for my new forever home longer than anyone else currently here (just shy of a whole year now…).  I am mellow, wise, loving, gorgeous, good humored, good-natured and more. The only thing that can explain why I have been overlooked so long is my age. I am only 9 for crying out loud! What is up with people and their affinity for kittens (don’t you know those little critters are nuts?!?) and aversion to a refined, more mature fluffy individual.

So, rather than waste time feeling sorry for myself I have been applying my skills of stealth, eavesdropping, and fake napping to my advantage and have been able to hack into the shelter computer and infiltrate the Pet Column password to write my own column. The staff think they do a pretty good job of promoting the adoptable pets, but I am not impressed…I’m still here aren’t I?

I have to make this fast because some alarm system is bleating in my ear now. Security here must be tighter than I realized. But I just felt it important to let you know that my age is not my worth.  At nine years young, I still have a lot of love to give (and receive) and you will be missing out on a great companion if you choose some snotty young, demanding kitten over me (or even worse –an obnoxious dog…).

We have been experiencing a delayed yet significant kitten season here at Second Chance and those cute cuddly little monsters are just making it more difficult for a mature cat like me to find a home. I am low maintenance, yet still very interesting and entertaining if that is your thing. I am even willing to wash ( read, lick) your dishes and exterminate any house spiders.

Please consider me for your next furry family member. Then I go back to just being a ordinary feline, and Second Chance’s regular Pet Column can return to its usual focus: spay/neutering, human-animal bonding, blah blah blah…

Editor’s note: It’s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue.  Second Chance is the region’s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals’ lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. In her weekly blog, executive director Kelly Goodin profiles two of the many animals now living at the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving permanent homes. The column is sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer, partnering with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.

By the by, there is no better place to park your pup than Cottonwood whenever you head out of town (for locals) or are heading to town and staying somewhere that does not allow pets. Consider joining Ted’s Very Important Dog (VID) Club for added benies. (Details on Ted’s website.)

Second Chance Humane Society Animal Resource Center and Thrift Shop are both located in Ridgway, but service San Miguel, Ouray & Montrose Counties. Call the SCHS Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet, learn about adopting a homeless pet, or about the SCHS Spay/Neuter, Volunteer, Feral Cat, or other Programs.
