10 Jul Kate Spear Leads Kirtan At Telluride Yoga Fest 2013
It was music to our ears to learn that former Telluride local Kate Spear will be returning to town to make an appearance at the 6th annual Telluride Yoga Festival,Thursday – Sunday, July 11 – July 14. The kirtan takes place Saturday, July 13, 7:30 – 9 p.m., Elementary School Cafeteria.
Kirtan derives from the Sanskrit (the language of yoga) “kirtanam,” meaning praise or eulogy. The term refers to devotional group singing of mantras, sounds charged with psycho-spiritual powers. It is a well-documented fact that prolonged and concentrated chanting of these sounds, even without a clear understanding of the literal meaning of the words, leads to positive alterations in consciousness.
Kate is an energy healer, conscious commerce coach, kirtan singer and RYT-200 yogini from Boulder Colorado, who has spent a lifetime on a path of conscious awakening. And by a “lifetime” we mean she began playing music at age six.
Kate embraced kirtan and chanting while living in an ashram in Boulder for 10 years. Today, she teaches harmonium, chanting, energy work, bhakti yoga, prosperity awakening and leads kirtans around the country. In fact, on Sunday, July 14, 2:30 p.m., she leads a class in bhakti yoga at the close of Yoga Fest.
