25 May REV. PAT BAILEY: EVOLVING LANDSCAPES, LIBRARY TALKS
Editor’s note: Rev. Pat Bailey, pastor of Telluride’s Christ Presbyterian Church, takes a developmental and evolutionary view of faith, spirituality, and religious community. Join him for his weekly blog as he explores the ever-changing landscapes of perspectives and consciousness and discusses both the challenges and promise of trying to make meaning in our evolving social context. Rev. Bailey holds a Master of Divinity from Columbia Seminary, a Master of Theology in comparative religion from Emory University, and a Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary.
This summer I will be leading a discussion at the Wilkinson Public Library around the topic of evolutionary consciousness. We will be viewing and discussing clips from such people as cosmologists Brian Swimme and Philip Clayton, philosophers Ken Wilber and Jacob Needleman, evolutionary theologians Michael Dowd and Bruce Sanguin, world religions expert Houston Smith, biological anthropologist Helen Fisher, and mindfulness teacher Eckhart Tolle.
Some of the questions that we will be considering are: What are the forces that have shaped the universe and what connects the natural order as a whole? What in our evolutionary past has shaped our current experience as human beings? How might we locate emerging shifts in consciousness or worldview within the larger evolutionary journey? What hope might there be for the future of life on earth and what role will humanity play in that future? How are our views and practices of spirituality effected by our expanding knowledge of the universe and attending shifts in consciousness?
I hope that you will be able to join us for the discussion. We will be meeting each Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be eight sessions altogether, beginning on Thursday, June 6, and ending Thursday, August 1. We will not meet on Thursday, July 4 for obvious reasons.
Be listening out for recorded interviews I will be giving about the program soon on Telluride Inside and Out and KOTO.
Peace.
