07 Apr TELLURIDE ADAPTIVE SPORTS PROGRAM: SKIING WITH VETS
The Telluride Ski Resort formally closes this afternoon. It’s been a strange year on the mountain. Personally, it was a short but great year for me.
On March 19 & 20 I had two of my best days of skiing this season. TASP had several sessions of riding with military veterans in the Winter of 2012-13, most of which I missed because of being away from Telluride most of the season.
But I hit the jackpot when Wounded Warrior Project’s Colorado Springs chapter came to play in the snow with us. I spent two great days skiing with Gretchen Moran, former Army helicopter pilot, now living in Fort Collins. We were having such a good time that Shauna Smith from Project Odyssey joined us much of the time.
We skied plenty of cruisers, including Lift 12 runs in several inches of new dry snow, and we hit some classic groomed runs such as Plunge and Bushwacker. But the highlight was skiing Genevieve and Westlake, hike-to runs above the Prospect Bowl lift. Gretchen got a taste of steep and (relatively) deep in Telluride. I’m sure it took days to get the grin off her face.
