YOUR AH HAA MOMENT: FIBER SHOW OPENS WITH ART WALK

Telluride’s Ah Haa School for the Arts’ juried fiber arts show was never meant to be a showcase for super duper sewing skills. It was not even about creating a unique piece of art – functional or not – using fiber. The show when announced last fall was intended to inspire people to go beyond what is typical in the genre – be it wearable art, art quilts, fabric sculpture – taking fiber arts to an exceptional level.

Because pushing the envelope was the name of the game, the jury looked for works that were not just beautiful, but also showed real ingenuity. The deadline for submissions was Monday, January 28. Selection by a jury, which included Ah Haa executive director Judy Kohin, board members Robert Weatherford and Kathy Green and fiber artist Nancy Craft, took place Friday, February 8.

Ah Haa’s fiber arts exhibition, “Crafting Outside the Box,” opens Thursday, March 7, to coincide with Telluride Arts’ First Thursday Art Walk. The artists’ reception takes place 5 – 8 p.m. The show runs through April.

Green, who has instructed batik classes for the Ah Haa for many years, is particularly tickled pink about the show.

“There were an incredible amount of submissions. We had about 85 pieces submitted and 45 were accepted. The work is diverse, with quilts, wearable art, sculptures and mixed media. There were lots of surprise entries. We encourage people to come and find out who the unknown fiber artists are in their neighborhood. The list of selected artists includes well known fiber artists such as Kathleen Morgan and Sue Hobby, as well as some new faces, including Beth Bailis and Jacque Young.”
