YOUR AH HAA MOMENT: OPPORTUNITIES IN METAL & JEWELRY ARTS

IMG_4977As spring approaches, Ah Haa continues with plenty of exciting offerings, including upcoming options in metal fabrication and jewelry. Beginner and experienced artists have the opportunity to get their hands dirty with local instructors Jennifer Dewey and Jon Hubbard.

For those with previous experience in jewelry making, Jennifer Dewey will be teaching an Intro to Wax Carving & Small-Scale Casting Techniques this weekend, Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Students will be introduced to the tools and techniques for laying out a simple pendant design upon wax. Carving, joining and build-up techniques will be demonstrated, as students create a pendant of their own design.

For those with little or no jewelry experience, Dewey will lead a small-scale metal-smithing class on Monday, March 4, 4-7 p.m., during which students will design and create a pair of earrings. The class will introduce students to the decorative techniques of metal piercing, in addition to annealing, design layout, roller printing of soft metals, sawing, forming, filing, jump rings, hook earring findings, post soldering and finishing.

Want to fabricate with metal on a large scale? Consider learning how to weld with Jon Hubbard.

Specifically women are invited to join together for a Welding for Women class on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Or, those with a little experience can join Hubbard’s Intermediate Welding workshop on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Both classes take place at Hubbard’s welding shop at Deep Creek, down valley from Telluride. Either class will enable participants to create functional metal pieces using the powers of fire and steel.

Space is very limited, so register soon.

To enroll one of these upcoming jewelry or welding classes at Ah Haa, call the school at 728-3886. More information on these and other Ah Haa classes is available online at ahhaa.org.
