29 Dec SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS WEATHER: COLD AND SNOW, 12/29/12
Weak surface high pressure is over Colorado this morning keeping cold air over the region with zero or below temps in the mountains and lower valleys. Air temperatures will increase during the day along with cloud cover and flow will turn to the southwest as the ridge of high pressure moves east tonight.
A split trough is working its way through the Great Basin today and will be in western Utah by Sunday. The storm should reach the San Juans by Sunday afternoon and then will spread north through New Years Eve. This is not a big storm but snowfall amounts should be near 6 inches at lower elevations with up to a foot of snow on favored SW aspects above 11,000′ by the end of the year. Dry northwest flow will settle over the San Juans for much of the remainder of the week.
