Those are just nine of the 66 species of coral proposed for endangered listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

On Friday, November 30, after more than three years of review, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service proposed an ESA listing to protect corals, a much-needed step to help this highly vulnerable, and incredibly important part of ocean and coastal ecosystems.

Corals aren’t just beautiful, although the amazing variety of shapes and colors they come in help drive coastal tourism in many communities. They also provide a wide range of natural benefits and services that we all rely on. These include storm protection and critical fish habitat.
