TELLURIDE OPERA HOUSE: CINDY & THE SADDLE SHOES

TELLURIDE OPERA HOUSE: CINDY & THE SADDLE SHOES

What do you get when you combine the well-loved fairytale Cinderella and set it in a 1950s diner?  Answer: “Cindy & the Saddle Shoes,” the title of artistic director Jennifer Julia’s  newest offering for Sheridan Arts Foundation Young People’s Theater.

The show, performed by 22 local youth from grades 6 – 8, is scheduled for this coming weekend: Friday, November 30 – Sunday, December 2, 2012.

The story revolves around Cindy Relish, a sweet, hardworking girl who is terribly mistreated by her awful stepmother, diner owner Maybelline Relish, and her nasty daughters, Sharon, Shirley, and Maxine.  Throw in a leather-jacket clad gang of cool kids, a peppy cheer squad, a few adorable nerds, and a famous Hollywood movie director (Why not?), and you’ve got a goofy, joyous, rollicking musical comedy for the whole family to enjoy.

“Some might consider it odd to combine Rodgers & Hammerstein show tunes with 1950s doo-wop numbers, but that’s the tradition of the SAFYPT…We make our own rules!” said Julia.

“I wrote this play to include wacky yet accessible characters that middle school students would enjoy playing,” Julia continued. “It’s a classic story with a fun twist. And who doesn’t love poodle skirts?”

Julia is joined by music director Bob Callendale Israel, choreographer and YPT alum Lyndia Peralta, and set designer Buff Hooper.

Tickets for “Cindy & the Saddle Shoes” are $13 for adults; $11 for kids 12 and under. Lap kids are free. Tickets are for reserved seating and are available on the Sheridan Opera House website.

The concessions stand will be open for every performance.
