USA PRO CYCLING CHALLENGE KICKS OFF IN DURANGO

You’d have to live in a box (not a box canyon) if you live in/have an interest in Telluride and don’t know that the 2012 edition of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge begins on Monday, August 20 with a stage from Durango to Telluride. I rode my bike (motor, not bicycle) to Durango on Saturday to attend the kick-off press conference. I’m new to covering bike racing so I didn’t know what to expect. Eight riders, including Levi Leipheimer who was last year’s overall winner, spoke to a big crowd at Fort Lewis College’s Concert Hall.

There were interesting insights into last year’s race, humorous inside jokes at each other’s expense, and a sense of camaraderie at being a part of this very difficult and very new event. I left with excited anticipation of watching this seven day endurance test, not least because of the role my town of Telluride will play in it.

Keep an eye on Telluride Inside… and Out for our impressions of the week.
