TWEED 8750: MOROCCAN MADNESS

TWEED 8750: MOROCCAN MADNESS

While the rest of the country is experiencing March madness, the world of design is enjoying Moroccan madness.

Spotting Moroccan influences in interior design is nothing new; there has always been an allure to its sensuous and exotic mystery. But now, Moroccan inspired decorating accents are everywhere. Look for patterns with geometric prints, poufs in rich colors and lamps with a refined ethnic flair. And though these pieces look imported, handcrafted and expensive, they are available at various price points and in a variety of stores.

Because each piece brings a touch of splendor, the addition of one can make a dramatic statement in any room. Here are three easy ways to bring a little Moroccan inspiration into your home this spring.

White Giants: Gorgeous Beni Ouarain carpets, referred to as white giants, are popping up everywhere. These large, white, pile area rugs instantly add texture and a sense of indulgence to a hallway, bedroom or common area. Reminiscent of Morocco’s Middle Eastern influence, they are often decorated with geometric designs — widespread black or brown overlapping diamonds. Their neutral palette makes them easy to pair with just about anything, but their African panache makes them far from ordinary. TWEED loves the vintage beauties from John Derian in NYC.  But, if Derian will break your bank, check out Restoration Hardware’s variations of the real deal. We won’t tell.

Poufs: Design writers and bloggers cannot say enough about Moroccan poufs. Their versatile use and array of colors make them a must-have for your home. Use them as extra seating in your living room or stash them in your entryway so guests can sit and remove their shoes. They are also great in a child or teen room; once your junior decorator sees them, they will be on her MUST HAVE list. They should already be on yours. Check out our silver and magenta poufs at TWEED!

Lights: What better way to see your new Moroccan home accents, than with Moroccan inspired lighting. From intricate metal chandeliers to oversized lanterns, these fixtures will add an eclectic or ethnic look to any room, indoor or out. They can be found just about anywhere, from Target to Potterybarn. (Yes, REALLY!) We prefer the hanging style lantern from Viva Terra to  set the perfect mood.

Though most of us would love to travel to Morocco to personally pick out a one-of-a-kind rug, handcrafted silver lamp, or crimson died pouf, with these tips and the abundant loot right here stateside,  you’re set to make that eclectic find locally or online. March is the time to get out there and find a treasure that will instantly transcend any room into a romantic Moroccan lair –-  maybe even the one where your significant other plans to watch college hoops.
