Please raise your hand if you have not received an appeal for funds in your mailbox. Thought so. In Telluride as in the rest of the world, ’tis the season for eggnog and philanthropy. But what if giving to your favorite nonprofit were as easy as shopping for food? Got to put food on your table, no?

Here’s the lowdown. If you are a regular customer of Clark’s Market, then you should know about the Cashsavers program, a fundraiser that allows shoppers to contribute to the community in a unique way. And it’s simple. The store’s computer keeps track of how much we customers have spent based on any four-digit number we establish. Every $30 purchased equals one Cashsaver slip, which can be spent on extremely discounted goods OR – and here’s the punch line – saved up and placed in a box to support the nonprofit of the week. For every slip an organization collects, Clark’s donates 50 cents. Lots of Telluride nonprofits have collected hundreds of dollars through Cashsavers. Just ask Nancy Landau, president of the Friends of the Library and she’ll tell you about the dishwashers, sink, disposal and faucet, a whole kitchen package for the Program Room at the Wilkinson Public Library purchased with funds raised through Cashsavers last year.

The 2011 Cashsavers initiative in support of the five-star Wilkinson Public Library begins Thanksgiving week, starting Sunday, November 20. And this year, the Friends have their own unique Cashsaver number: it’s 0007 (or James Bond on steroids.)

Now you know about Cashsavers, but if you remain clueless about the Friends of the Library, read on.

Friends of the Library was established to assist the San Miguel County Public Library District #1. The goals of the organization include promoting public awareness of library services, support for library improvement and advancement, and sponsoring cultural and educational programs & activities. For the 4th year in a row The Wilkinson earned five stars from The American Library Association so somebody must be doing something right. (It should go without saying that “somebody” starts with the Library’s dynamic director Barb Brattin, and her managers and staff, whose efforts are supported by the “Friends.”)

If you treasure Telluride’s Library as a mecca for young people, a place for you to hangout, work, or enjoy Scott Doser’s unending stream of first-rate programs, you will want to participate in Clark’s Cashsaver program starting today.

And while we are on the subject of “Friends,” mark you calendar for Sunday, December 4, when FOL hosts a “Dinner with Friends.”
On that special evening, Chef Bud plans to feature recipes from the best of “Books & Cooks” programs from the past 2 1/2 years. The evening includes cocktails, wine, sit-down dinner, live music, door prizes, and special guest and cookbook author, Dr. Susanna Hoffman.
