30 Jul Dog's Best Friend: Training an older pup
Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel has emphasized often how puppy training should start at a fairly young age. But what about that pup who somehow got to be a year old, and a lot set in his ways?
This video shows Ted working with a one year old Golden Retriever, who was used to jumping up, pulling when on a lead, and ignoring commands by evading eye contact. Ted shows us one session with this young dog, in which he goes from pulling and jumping to a proper sit/stay, and working easily with a loose lead.
The key elements are the same as always: get the dog calm by being calm yourself; don’t accept less than appropriate behavior; repetition; praise when it is deserved. This is a beautiful example of good training.
And yes, you can teach an old(er) dog new tricks.
