Taurus and the Four Gates of Avataric Descent

Bull It’s green, green, green down here on Wright’s Mesa. The quickly melting snows of spring have left us with thick carpets of emerald grass, budding trees and delicate wildflowers. The bright reds of Indian paintbrush are popping out amongst the scrubby sage and desert cactus. Bluebirds flutter and meadowlarks sing, a pair of young bald eagles dip and dive, hunting for prairie dogs, and a lone coyote trots through pinon, looking for rabbits. Mornings are still, the air is cool and the wind at rest. By afternoon, the earth has warmed and breezes start to blow. Clouds morph and shadows shimmy, calves frolic and lambs romp. We find ourselves smack, dab, in the middle of spring.

There are four cross-quarter days in the tropical solar year, and one of them takes place when we are exactly halfway through Taurus the Bull – this week – usually falling on the Julian calendar dates of May 5th or 6th. These four cross-quarter days mark the halfway point between the bi-annual equinoxes and solstices, and are times of strong planetary force and power. The Earth’s polar axis is at a 45º angle to the Sun and electromagnetic pulls are at a maximum. Whether we realize it consciously or not, we are feeling the invisible pressures, will and intentions of the cosmos.

WheelIn esoteric circles, these points are referred to as the Four Gates of Avataric Descent and represent particular types of cosmic energetic release. At these times the energies or realizations gathered at the equinoxes and solstices are released and made effective. The Bull [Taurus] and the Lion [Leo] express individuating power – power rooted in the planet via concrete selfhood – while the Eagle [Scorpio] and the Angel [Aquarius] express collectivating power – power that expands the individual toward the collective and universal. Combined with the recent Saturn/Uranus opposition in Virgo/Pisces, the April 28th Taurus/Scorpio Full Moon and Mercury retrograde in Taurus, this particular cross-quarter day and week resonate with realization, power, possibility and potential. Celestial energy encourages us to review the past, live in the present and prepare for the future. It's a perfect time to identify dysfunction in ourselves and our relationships, accept responsibility for our part and implement practical strategies for change. Mercury goes direct on May 11th @ 4:27 pm MDT. Good luck and may the Force be with you!

Aries (Mar. 21-Apr.19)
The last week of Mercury retrograde encourages personal inventories of self and situation. Where are you today and how did you get there? Utilize your natural, inherent courage to take an honest and fearless look at yourself. Recognize where you can take responsibility and improve performance. In the process, be kind and gentle. It’s time to feel and heal.

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)
Lately, it’s been all about you. Past and present performance, behaviors and accomplishments swirl and twirl around and about, causing others to evaluate, consider and discuss. Good things come to those who take the bull by the horns and get the job done. Patience and perseverance are allies. Focus on what needs to be finished, rather than starting anew.

Gemini (May 21-June 21)
Voluptuous Venus travels through the late degrees of Gemini this week, shimmering rays of love and beauty upon Twins who utilize diplomacy, tact and grace in their relationships. Practice kindness in the face of family dramas and personal traumas. It can be hard to accept, but the Universe usually delivers exactly what we need. Be cool and stay calm.

Cancer (June 22-July 22)
You find yourself recollecting or reconnecting with old friends and associates this week. A waning Moon and Mercury retrograde in your solar 11th house of humanitarian concerns takes you down a path of enlightened review regarding who you’ve been with, where you’ve gone and what you’ve done. Life is a process of progress, not perfection. Be kind.

Leo (July 23-Aug.22)
If you’re feeling frustrated or ineffective professionally, blame it on Mercury retrograde. Rather than fight the tide, go with the flow. Planetary energies favor patience, perseverance and realistic, practical acts that focus on sustained effort and productive creativity. Sometimes we just have to tow the line and do our part. Recognition and reward comes later.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep.22)
Feeling the stress and strife of life’s practical realities and less-than-glamorous scenarios and situations? Are you feeling self-pity, fear or disappointment? Perhaps it’s time to count your blessings and practice gratitude. Lessons are good things and patience is a virtue. Recognize your accomplishments, pat yourself on the back and simply do your best.

Libra (Sep. 23-Oct.22)
As the Moon wanes and night skies darken, gaze into the magic and mystery of the cosmos. Twinkling constellations and shining planets glisten and glow, reflecting the essential energies of the universe. We are the stars, we are the children, we are the souls and spirits of the ancients and the future. Do what you can, live the dream and share the love.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
The last week of Mercury retrograde in your solar 7th house of long-term relationships favors the ongoing review and reassessment of the people with whom you partner, your personal role in partnership and the commitments to which you have committed. Research, negotiate and discuss joint financial investments, but wait to act or sign up until mid-May.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23-Dec. 20)
The Taurus zodiac month focuses on the basics of physical sustenance and financial security. For the Archer, it’s all about establishing daily routines that feed the body, soothe the soul and pay off in ways that you can touch and feel. Eat good food, get plenty of sleep and walk when you can. Accomplishment is precious, do the work and enjoy the benefits.

Capricorn (Dec. 21-Jan. 19)
You may find yourself returning to a creative project or a romantic option this week as Mercury and the Sun transit your solar 5th house of love. Whatever you do, follow your heart, do what makes you happy and pay attention to what inspires you. Relax a bit and laugh as much as possible. Physical health improves via outside walks and clean, fresh air.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Challenges at home or relationships with family may upset the applecart, demand attention or require financial attention. Whatever happens, stay as emotionally detached and spiritually balanced as possible. Maintain healthy boundaries and practice living in the present. Partners may motivate, excite, push or pull you. Enjoy the heat, but stay cool.

Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
You may feel as if you’ve been repeating and rethinking the same words and thoughts, over and over, again and again. Communications may be taxing or redundant, so take a break. It’s time to change your perspective and simply focus on the truth. Emotions can cloud your vision, especially when close friends and family are involved. Take it one day at a time.
