March 2010

For the past several weeks we have watched Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel work with his dogs, showing us the training techniques he uses to keep the dogs sharp and interested. Ted emphasizes that working breeds need a job to do....

Telluride is populated by winners from all walks of life: skiers, bikers, artists, writers. Now the town itself takes home the gold.

Vernal Equinox and the Creative Spark of Spring

Michelangelo-creation-adam- On March 20th, at 11:32 a.m. MDT, the Sun enters the cardinal fire-sign of Aries and the emerging season of spring begins. We experience a day of equal light and dark, a brief 24 hours of celestial balance and cosmic equilibrium. We are entering the season of increasing light, planting and growth. It’s a time when we instinctively feel renewal and rebirth, intuit the awakening of our Mother Earth and are ready to explore, discover and go forth.

I always think of Michaelangelo’s painting The Creation of Adam this time of year. Mutable Pisces – the numinous, invisible and divine – gives way to primal Aries – the creative spark of selfhood. The gestation period is over. The amniotic waters of winter have broken. Man is born anew.

Percyjackson_smallteaser Thehurtlocker_smallposter The movies this week at Telluride's Nugget Theatre are "The Hurt Locker" and "Lightning Thief" with a special showing of Academy Award-nominated "Invictus" on Thursday, March 25. "Invictus" is presented by the Telluride Film Festival.

"Lightning Thief" (rated PG) is Greek mythology brought into modern America and concerns a lad saving his mother and returning Zeus' lightning bolt. By the way, Zeus is the boy's father.

Invictus_smallposter The Oscars were good for "The Hurt Locker" (rated R) as the movie picked up six awards. The story is about combat bomb squad volunteers, and probably has a bit of violence.

On Thursday, March 25, the Telluride Film Festival presents "Invictus" which earned Oscar nominations for Morgan Freeman (as Nelson Mandela) and Matt Damon.

See below for showtimes, and the Nugget website for trailers and reviews.

Silk2 East meets West at Telluride's Ah Haa School for the Arts later this month, Monday – Wednesday, March 29 – 31, 6 – 9 p.m., when Kathy Green teaches "Simply Shibori/Simply Fun."

Shibori is a cloth resist-dyeing technique that may include binding, stitching, folding, twisting, or compressing to create dye patterns on silk in Japan since the eighth century. Western civilization does not have an exact word equivalent to encompass all the techniques of shibori. The closest we get is tie-dye, but the term (and technique) simply covers the binding method of dyeing known as bound-resist.

My life is full of diverse interests, but really, leadership and worm bins? Hand on a Bible, true.

This week I’m attending a Collaborative Leader workshop at Healing Leaders down in beautiful McElmo Canyon, just outside of Cortez.  What's it all about?

According to the website  www.healingleaders.net,  “a healing leader is one who creates an environment of open communication, respect for each person’s role and contributions, a common, compelling vision for the organization and a collaborative ethic.”

Telluride's historic Sheridan Opera House is throwing a party for itself on Friday, March 19. The fun-raiser starts at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails. A cooking show and four-course Italian dinner follows, orchestrated by the guest of honor and prepared by Telluride's The Butcher and The Baker. The evening ends with a live auction and dancing to burn some of the calories – and a hole in your wallet for a popular cause.
