Every year during the Scorpio zodiac month, I write about mystery and magic, death and rebirth, metaphysics and metamorphosis. It’s the time for witches and witchcraft, spells and potions. It’s the time of matted grass, swirling leaves and naked trees. The Queen of Darkness grabs the sepulcher from autumn’s Libra Fairy Princess and ushers in the season of lengthening night and freezing frost. We light fires and turn up the heat to ward off the cold. We are thankful for warm homes, cozy couches and extra blankets.

The stunning radiance of Indian Summer graces many of our days, but we are well aware of Old Man Winter knocking at the door. Our first snowstorms come during the Scorpio sun-time, and because of the earths still temperate ground, icy slush, blinding snow and glazing ice create some of the most dangerous driving conditions of the year.

Fifteen years ago, on Nov. 13, 1994, my beautiful niece, Lise, was driving from Ft. Collins back to college at the University of Colorado. She had left Boulder that morning in shorts and a T-shirt. It was a classic Colorado Indian Summer day – clear blue skies, warm and embracing. By the time she’d returned her books to the library, shopped and had pizza dinner with a friend, it was dark, and a storm was moving in.

A blizzard descended upon the Front Range with a vengeance. Halfway home, she was hit head-on by a pickup truck sliding out of control. She didn’t make it. Today, I still feel the deep pain and sorrow of her death. Her passing brought our family to its knees. The loss of a loved one is big, especially when they are young and strong.

But life goes on and life is for the living. Hearts are filled with love, minds are rich with the memories of those who’ve come and gone. Some days, I can feel my niece’s presence; I can see her laughing, singing and dancing. It’s as if she’s never left. I can feel her arms around my back, her giant hug, and I know she’s here somewhere. She’s here with me in spirit, in my heart, body and soul, right here, right now. Peace, Lise. We love you. Thanks for coming and going, sharing and blessing…

Good things come to those who expand their view and look at life and death from a higher perspective. Daily spiritual practice alleviates stress and promotes inner peace. Calm down, refrain from multi-tasking and focus on what’s right in front of you. Continue prioritizing and structuring time as you organize possessions and discard excess.

Cancer (June 22-July 22)
A rather steamy, dreamy lunar cycle enhances creative self-expression and enhances romance. It’s all about the heart this week and you discover the magic of love and the power of passion. Maintain momentum when it comes to the pursuit of what you want. The stars favor those who are self-motivated, courageous, competent, honest and fair. Do your best.

Leo (July 23-Aug.22)
Fires crackle and sparks fly as red-hot Mars continues marching through Leo, igniting passion and fueling desire. Be on the lookout for behaviors of self-aggrandizement and ego-based endeavors. You have a lot of personal power now and it’s imperative to channel it wisely. Self-will run wild is a dangerous beast. Cultivate peace at home and maintain calm.
