Blessing the Beauty and Bounty of the October Harvest Moon

Yesterday the wind blew so hard it lifted the roof off one of our loafing sheds. And on the way up and off, it hit and snapped the electric power line running above it. My husband and brother-in-law were sitting at our kitchen table when it happened, having lunch. The tall power pole outside the kitchen window suddenly bent and swayed. They knew something big was “in the wind” and rushed outside to find a live power line that had been cut in two and was lying red-hot on the highway. In its journey down, it had sparked a fire in the tall grass growing along the roadside. The roof to the shed had flipped over and was upside down between the road and the shed. My husband went in to call 911, the Fire Department and San Miguel Power. His brother and the two guys working with them that day digging trees ran out with shovels to start tamping the flames. Wow!

It’s now officially autumn and the leaves from here to Redvale are stunning. Vibrant colors of red, green and yellow dance amidst the tawny blonde fields of cut hay and swaying grass. Virginia creeper creeps along fences and outbuildings, painting them a brilliant crimson. Last week, Norwood held its annual Pioneer Day Parade; complete with cowboy Roudy Roudebush, Marine Vince Egan and a variety of locally crafted floats and colloquial characters. Luckily, the nature spirits cooperated and there was no wind. Just magnificent Indian Summer. Yes!

This week, on Oct. 4th at 12:10 am, the Libra Sun and Aries Moon exactly oppose each other, bringing us the fruition of this year's Full Harvest Moon. May we count our blessings, pay our respects and enjoy the bounty and beauty of our magnanimous planet Earth.
