IMG_0172 SMRC's Chocolate Lovers' Fling, the nonprofit’s only major public fundraiser, takes place on Saturday, February 7, at the Telluride Conference Center. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Marriage is gobbledygook, a gallimaufry of biblical, classical, courtly and Christian rules and mores. Historically, the ritual was a way to regulate procreation and tighten the screws on unbridled lust – especially female lust. Relatively recently, marriage became a tribute to romantic love and lifelong companionship. But it does not always affirm the optimism the institution celebrates.

The mission of Telluride’s San Miguel Resource Center is to put itself out of business by ending domestic violence and sexual abuse in the region that extends from San Miguel County to the west end of Montrose County. The nonprofit helps anyone in trouble in an intimate relationship help themselves – including the ones who took the vow “for better or for worse,” and found the emphasis on the latter.

The theme of the SMRC’s 14th annual Chocolate Lovers’ Fling is “The Wedding,” an evening of chocolate confections and awards for chefs, music (D.J. Harry is back to spin) and dance, silent auction, a raffle – last year’s winner received $1700 – cash prizes for the Best Dressed.

Please take note: Executive director of the SMRC, Nancy Anderson, asked TIO to include the following information:
Second Chance Humane Society has requested that after the Fling, wedding costumes be donated to the Second Chance thrift store in Ridgway, because they are having a fundraiser on Feb. 21st that involves a wedding themed fashion show.
