17 Oct wide awake in seattle
Ok, maybe not Seattle exactly, but across the lake in Bellevue, last night Clint and I hooked up with part-time Telluride local and former Mountainfilm director Arlene Chester Burns at the Bellevue Art Museum. The get-together was to celebrate the opening of an exhibition of the work of her old friend, Randy Shull. Shull is an 3-D artist, whose furniture, painting/furniture combos, iconic clocks, etc. lie at the nexus of fine and folk art. His art, much like glass art, begs the question: is there truly art without craft or craft without art? Randy’s work is a self-portrait: he is colorful, whimsical, imaginative, commanding, clever. Our dinner conversation at Seastar reflected colorful landscape of his mind: Joseph Campbell, Rembrandt, Obama (he is a supporter) and biking trips around the world with his partner, Heddy Fischer.
