In 1970, just out of high school, Denver-born Cynthia Hansen Zehm decided to visit the Southwest corner of the state. The incredible beauty of the Telluride region called her and she moved to town in 1977.

When she first moved to Telluride, Cynthia opened a store right above the current location of the Fly Me to the Moon Saloon. The Ritzy Gypsy sold her hand-made leather clothes and consignment from other local fibroids.

Cynthia met her husband Richard, a wild man skier from California, and the two built a house on Hastings Mesa.

Cynthia , a third-generation astrologer, never considered reading stars and planets a professional option until she watched her partners making money doing readings In the loft of their store.

Cynthia began writing her column 20 years ago in 1988 for The Telluride Times. Alacazem is a pun on the French “a la”  or “by,” the “ca” for “Cynthia” and “zem” for “Zehm.”

Her column will be published weekends starting in December on this blog, “Telluride Inside…and Out.”

I love Indian Summer! This last week has been one of Colorado’s best – deep, crystalline blue skies, a touch of autumn in the air and the brilliant, warming rays of a September Sun. The first golden leaves of autumn are starting to appear, the Virginia creeper on our front gate is touched with crimson and the azure bluebirds that have been with us all summer are gathering on fence posts and treetops to softly sing about their upcoming journey to their winter homelands south of the border.

Thank you all for being a part of the cosmic consciousness. We are all here together on Earth to do what we can, shaping the world and the Universe with our love, our laughter and our light. May you be blessed and happy in these very special and often challenging times; may you walk in beauty and experience grace. Peace and joy!
